2nd reference sheet for Gene's redesign. I think I really had the most fun redesigning Gene because again, it felt like I was practically creating a new character, one who I always had a vague idea of what to do with originally but now had more inspiration to build upon her concept more. Now she's got more autonomy and personality than I ever remember giving her in the beginning. As you can see here, Tifa wasn't my only reference in mind when it came to this revamping of her design/character, Videl from Dragon Ball Z was another huge influence, probably a little more so than Tifa. If Hero is supposed to be the "Gohan" of my Sonic AU, than Gene was always going to be his "Videl", somebody who not only motivates him but can also fight alongside him and contribute towards whatever shared effort there is (again, Sonic Forces, everybody is fighting for the same cause, and of course I've got story ideas beyond that one, lol). It also just really helped with coming up with different wardrobe ideas. The casual jacket and sneakers look is a cute favorite and all, but it's also nice to give her some variety, especially when she's supposed to become more active as a character in later stories. I think she looks very cute in glasses, but considering how tricky it can be for me to convincingly draw glasses from profile views, I might consider just giving her contacts for later stories, so I'm at least not obscuring her face as much (or, I could just git good, whichever's first, lol).

I can't stress enough how happy I am that I've been able to change one of the biggest problems I've always had in the back of my head, the fact that she always just looked like a blatant purple Amy clone. I managed to keep the aspects of the design that I liked and found cute, but now she actually looks like her own character with her own personality and GAHHHHH I love it. It's just kind of stupid that for all that time I spent agonizing over that, it only took the simplest of changes to reach that point, lol. Go figure.
