Description
This is an acrylic painting of the South Brisbane Town Hall, close to the spot where I went to art college. I've painted this building a few times, the first time in 1994. My style has changed quite a bit since then. I might stick the first version (done in watercolour and gouache) into the "Scraps" section if I find it. The canvas board I painted this on had an unusually rough texture. It was almost like painting on sandpaper.Related content

This is a great piece, I thought it was a photo. No shit, your painting skills are extremely refined. Verry verry sharp. Speaking of lunchtime....

Thanks very much. The rough texture of the canvas board made it really easy to blend colours smoothly.

Thanks. A lot of the stuff I painted at art college involved trees and things. When I paint foliage in a landscape I get quite caught up in the dabbing and stabbing. It's easy to get carried away and overdo it but it can also be a good way to unwind.

I had to see a full view because I was sure it was a photo. Great job! How can you be so precise with acrylic?

I tend to use acrylics a bit like watercolour or gouache the first time I start on a picture. I just thin them right down. Once the first layer is dry I make each subsequent coat a bit thicker than the last one. Admittedly my brushes wear out pretty fast because of the rough treatment they get from the paint. Or when I don't clean them thouroughly enough. Putting watered down acrylic into nib pens is also handy for fine detail. That's what Fred Gambino does.

Awsome, as usual! Why did you call it lunchtime?

I took photographs of the building when I was on my lunchbreak eleven years ago. In the photo the hands on the clock face were in a different position, but it was still some time in the early afternoon. A lot of people tend to have their lunchbreaks arround midday. The first time I painted this building was for an art competition to do with Brisbane's architectural heritage.
