Description
Bodie Island Lighthouse Station Fun Facts:The first person contacted to build the lighthouse had no idea how to build a lighthouse.
The 54-foot tower began to lean within two years after completion.
Fearing that the 80-foot tower would be used by Union forces, retreating Confederate troops blew it up in 1861.
In 1871 a third Bodie Island Lighthouse began construction and was completed somewhere around 1872.
There were problems with flocks of geese crashing into the lens. OO
The light was electrified in 1932, phasing out the need for on-site keepers.
The building now serves as a ranger office and visitor center for Cape Hatteras National Seashore as of 2022.
It still remains to keep its watchful eye over what is called, the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.”.
