Oh my goodness. I thought I was the only one out there who was...very...attracted to this freaking Orc. I remember reading The Hobbit for the first time and watching the animated Hobbit film when I was much younger and being disgusted by Orcs...Now nearly 30 years on...Oh dear. You know, I blame Guillermo del Toro for this. I absolutely love his creature design and I know he prattled with a ton of stuff before he took his leave from the project, and I bet Azog's design is part of his brain-child. His designs are always haunting, no matter WHAT they're supposed to be.

Art-Calavera In reply to wildraven07 [2012-12-20 01:47:50 +0000 UTC]

You know, you may have a point there. There's some of del Toro's in Azog's design, mostly in the lack of clothing, perfect
immaculate features and symmetrical scar patterns, very uncommon in previous orc designs.

I must admit, even if I love Azog in design, I feel he doesn't quite fit in Peter Jackson's movie universe. I feel he's way too... I don't know, digital?
The one thing I always loved of th Lotr trilogy was the hand crafted feel that everything had. All the clothing was real, the make up was real, the dirt and wounds and monster were real. Even the cgi ones were crafted to look dirty and realistic.

I know that The Hobbit is a different movie, a bit more colorful, stylized and oneiric, but I still, I feel that there's something missing.
But Azog kicks ass!

wildraven07 In reply to Art-Calavera [2012-12-20 03:11:21 +0000 UTC]

I agree. The CGI-heavy stuff got a little old. I'm all for WETAs beautiful work, but LOTR just had immense amounts of impeccably crafted prosthetics, make-up art, costume design...The whole works. It made it an entirely different film. Or set of films. The creative team does differ between the two series'...But I try not to harp too much on it. I was in NZ when they first began filming The Hobbit and took a stroll through The Shire. It gave me chills just to see it come to life in front of me. I hope Smaug isn't as "shiny" and polished as Azog and some of the other creatures...I want him to be glorious, beastly, powerful. I have no doubt Benedict Cumberbatch will due him his well dues with his voice acting and performance capture (Apparently Mr. Cumberbatch is also the Necromancer too.)...But I hope WETA didn't go too crazy with the updated CGI we've been blessed and cursed with 10 years on from the LOTR trilogy.

I'd be interested to see a behind the scenes look at how much of Azog was actually Mr. Bennett in costume.

It's funny, I don't know why they kept Azog as a secret antagonist in this one. There's no track of him before the movie hit theatres. No photos, no videos, no trailers, not even action figures!
There's even more information about his son than about him!

I have the suspicion that adding Azog as the main antagonist for the first movie was something that happened very late in production, probably since the trilogy idea appeared. I mean, even Bolg appears in the movie posters and not him!

But hey, you went to NewZ during production! That's awesome!, it's been one of my life's dreams since the Fellowship!

NZ is awesome! I only got to run around the set for like half an hour and then go back to my own work but it was half an hour I'll never forget.

And yeah, they were pretty secretive about the whole release though. It was plagued with SO many contractual and legal issues from the get go, that I'm actually happy the films are getting made at all. There was a while those of us close to the movie biz world were afraid they would never come to fruition and Jackson would abandon the whole thing. Maybe those early troubles had something to do with it...Not sure. Or maybe he thought the book purist fans would be pissed they kept him around as one of the antagonists as opposed to keeping canon and him dying in the war.

I've just always been fascinated by Tolkien's works. Now seeing them come to life visually over the last 10 years has made me an imaginative 5 year old again.

Have you read, I believe it was hinted at in the Silmarillion, that one of Tolkien's origin stories about the orcs is that they were actually Avari that Melkor captured and corrupted? Kind of makes me think of interesting back stories for characters like Azog and his ancestry. I wonder if the creative team drew on that legend at all. The pale skin, the more humanoid features, a seemingly greater level of intelligence, etc. *Shrug* I don't know. It just kind of makes me go "Hmmm."

I wish I had the time to work on my own art and stories these days...So many ideas!
