Description
I'm so inspired it's driving me crazy.
Backstory:

The scientists at the genetics lab were overrun with experiements. They wanted to do so many projects! Animal hybrids and animal/human hybrids filled every mechanical womb they had. They hardly gave thier subjects attention with so many at hand. When one was born prematurely, a human/amphibian cross, they again gave it little mind. A colleague, feeling sorry for the strange but healthy hybrid, took it in. The creature was raised and was very healthy. Despite its inability to talk, it understand the world around him and commicated with signs and body language. But it aged rapidly, and in the "teenage" stage it became incredibly violent. Not knowing what to do, the foster scientist brought it back to the lab. He was placed in a white walled cell and left alone. It grew into adulthood and spent its time staring out the bars, waiting for one person to forgive him for his earlier angst. It longed for freedom and edured in silent solitude.

I don't see why making living, human-animal hybrids would be so wrong. Maybe it'd have more benefits than liabilities.

It's a controversial thing, but if making a human-animal hybrid was successful and the being was normal funtioning it'd be a good thing. But if the creature created was kinda...messed up...then I think it'd be more of torture but not every experiment works.

My mom tells me that the main problem is if, for example, we bred an orangutan to a gorilla, the offspring would die quickly.

That's very true. Most genetics aren't meant to work together. A warm blooded and cold blooded animal have different systems and I bet the offspring can't have a mix of both without something going wrong.

I really enjoy this piece, it is very detailed, great color, and texture, very nice 
I entered the contest too, but I am kinda a newbie, so I guess I did not quite know how to make it to the finals.

DA isn't letting me comment on submissions (arg, darn glitches) so I'll give you my comment here. It's on the artwork with the close-up and the dagger. You have several good comments on the second one already.
The ink wash is a nice effect. I think what would have helped it in the contest was to focus more on the creature, rather than just the head and a bit of the tail. With what's shown, you can't really tell how much splice it is. A bigger picture would tell a better story.
