Description These were just some quick sketches I did ( at work again. Seeing a pattern here? ) because I was trying to explore a way to draw the Bros in a way that was reminiscent of their original designs from the 90s, but were obviously my style. I tossed some color on Throttle not only because I'm still struggling to find an effective way of shading digitally that is effective but not time consuming ( because my digital commissions take me so danged long... I'm never happy with how they turn out ) and also because I wanted to experiment with trying to render leather.

He turned out a leeeeeetle darker than I wanted him to, but a lot of it is my monitor. I've gotten into the habit of sending WIPS to my cell phone to see how dark the contrast is in comparison and then adjusting the image in Photoshop as needed.

Character belongs to Rick Ungar-Brentwood Funnies-Marvel-Disney ( jeez louise have these guys been passed around ) and of course, art is mine.

How on earth (and mars) could it possibly happen, that I didn't comment on this one yet??!! ..my ever so gorgeous Throttle *swoons* I love his expression.. and his eyes are soooo beautiful.. I mean.. when do we ever get to see Throttles eyes.. a rare sight.. And I must admit, that I like his eyes in your style even better than the original..
*gazing into Throttles eyes with dopey expression*

LOL it happens- this one is kinda buried in the gallery folder.

I really wanted to do an expressive headshot for this little doodle, and eyes usually play a big role in expression. Β Despite his being blind, I like tilting his glasses from time to time to give a peek at his eyes- it seems to add to either his expression or to his overall demeanor that I'm trying to convey.

Thanks for the comment ^_^

You're welcome

Yep, that's why I love to draw eyes.. they're so expressive and I must admit that I have a liking for guys with glasses.. so Throttle glancing over his tilted glasses.. yeah, me likes ^_^
I like how warm his eyes look in the picutre.. they have a depth to them that fits his character.

Definitely ^_^. Not only are eyes great for expressive reasons, but varying their shape, angle, and size when you are designing a new character can really make a statement about the type of personality they are supposed to have.

Throttle is definitely a more aloof, detached, and guarded character and despite his blindness, I think that 'far-off stare' would still kinda translate to his eyes even if he still could see- but I think there would definitely be still a bit of kind warmth to them. Β He's definitely one of those 'you're only scratching the surface' characters whereas Vinnie and Modo both wear their hearts on their sleeves and their emotions are easily discernable. Β I've always found that interesting about Throttle's character. Β In other series, if not written well, character like that come across as extremely 1-dimensional and flat whereas Throttle never feels that way- you're always aware there are a whole lot of layers we're simply not seeing- Β hence, why seeing the franchise continue in a more adult vein like through graphic novel form as opposed to the kiddified 2006reboot would have been amazing for slowly stripping that away and revealing more of his underlying emotions and any relevant backstory. Β We have seen he has the ability to really blow a gasket when pushed to it- so it would really be interesting to see what else lies dormant inside him.

Ah well- that's what fanfic is for XD If I ever get any decent time to get back to work on it and related art XD

When I'm just doodling around I mostly start to draw eyes.. sometimes I draw a face around them but sometimes it's always one pair of eyes after the other, with different expressions, different sizes, colours.. I love drawing eyes ^_^ comic style or realistic, not matter

I'm aware that Throttle is blind without his field spec shades but I tend to forget that his eyes are malfunctioning bionicals. If I remeber it right they don't show much optical difference to his natural eyes in the series, so that might be the reason . You're right a far-off-stare would also fit his character, but I imagine his eyes sometimes would show a glimpes of what's beneath the surface.. who nows how many times his eyes would give a hint of what is going on inside of him.. but we can't see it because his shades cover them. So I guess the field specs also kind of suit his character, being a part of his guardedness.. and maybe a protection for him in some kind of way.. I share your opinion that there must be several layers to Throttle's personality and emotional life that we just don't see, because he rarely lets down his walls a little.
I guess it is one of the reasons I always liked him. I myself often have a hard time hiding my emotions in situations I'd better not show them..

Throttle really leaves a lot of room for speculations and imaginations concerning what's going on inside of him..

(gah sorry, I seem to lack the capabillity of expressing myself today..)

Yeah- the field specs seem to serve a double purpose- not just the practical purpose of allowing him to see, but also kind of further emphasizing 'distance' with him, and keeping him somewhat 'unavailable' to others. Eye communication is a trans-species and trans-cultural thing. I know personally- I have a habit of wearing my black eyeliner incredibly thick on my eyes- and even if I am just running to the gas station in the middle of the night, I *have* to have it on. It's my form of 'protection' and 'hiding' from others. A friend of mine says something similar- she has contacts, but prefers to wear her eyeglasses- without them she feels uncomfortable. Specifically, she says her glasses make her feel like she can hide behind them somehow and be less transparent to people. So I definitely think obscuring the eyes in some way adds to a person's feelings of distance and aloofness and being less approachable. So I think that was another aspect the writers and designers were going for giving Throttle his specs- as opposed to 'durr- they make him look cool' ( BMFM writers were more intelligent than average cartoon writers from my observation, and interestingly, if you look at the credits, a lot of them were female ).

And it totally makes sense what draws you to the character is that he exhibits a quality that you feel you don't have. A lot of times we look up to characters because they embody everything we wish we were. Several of my absolute favorite characters from animated shows/films and live-action movies are my favorites not because they are attractive or perfect or wealthy or have everything etc; but because they are everything I ever wanted to be.

I know that 'hiding' in a similar way. I rarely use any make-up, because I'm allergic to most of it. My eyes are a very dark brown and my lashes kinda long, but they turn blonde at the tips so they only look half as long as they are. So using mascara puts a lot of emphasis on my eyes, so I only use it when I want to 'be seen' or feel like I need to be more expressive..
When I was a kid I was totally scared of figures that didn't have faces, like for example some of those clothing-store manequin dolls.. and I still find these kinds things kinda creepy.
..plus I have always been jealous at my friends who had glasses, because I badly wanted glasses but never needed them.

I agree, BMFM is definitely one of the best written cartoon series ever! The writers put so much thought in the character designs, that Throttle's glasses and thought of so many details that Throttles glasses just can't be only for the sake of cool looks!

Most definitely. Early 90's was the 'X-treme!' era of pop culture. It was also the era of 'bad-ass talking animal' shows XD. Ahhh... Retro.... I miss those days...

The color picture, he looks like he's in mid-snark, or something. "Uhh, Vinnie? You know, with that gravel truck you were following, and all those explosions..." "It'll heal! Ow...sometime before the next episode..." "Have you ever thought of SHIRTS, Vinnie?"
