This was a cover image I did for the prologue issue for the comic series Free byThis cover wasn't free. I don't do free covers. Except for comics named Free. And even then it's not free. I can do a cover for your comic if I'm free at the moment. But it won't be free. Unless it's for another issue of Free. And even then it won't be free. I freely admit this is confusing. Feel free to ignore this writing.

Actually, I thought Free was a really cool concept. I still have the Prologium issue and I was reading it again recently. I think it was a really fun story with a lot of potential.

I wanted to do a Heavy Metal / Metal Hurlant type thing, with the same sort of 1970s style jump in, rattle along, surreal type stuff, and marker pen artwork. I consider it a prototype- it had some good stuff in it imo, but overall- I undercooked it. Dying with my leg in the air at the time didn't help it any either.
What I eventually wanted was an open source character that anyone could use- Free the Prisoner- who could just get dropped in media res on any kind of story - or even one page picture for that matter. In that respect the crazy crayon type artwork was just another take on my "Saturday Morning Cartoons for Adults" ethos.
I apologise for my skills not being up to snuff for the task in some ways- but I won't apologise for trying!
And thanks for the kind words, Sean, although our styles could literally not be more different I admire you and your work greatly, so for a peer to give me any props at all means a lot.

Free the Prisoner was meant to be a kind of itinerant Heavy Metal hero- just slot him in as comedy relief, serious action hero, Conanoid, whatever. As soon as I can find a good public domain heroes site I will set him... um, free...
