This illustration depicts the likely scenario that lead to a real fossil.
Species: Ichnogenus Batrachichnus salamandroides (temnospondyl or microsaur lepospondyl).
Fossil: Trackway consisting of 30 footprints.
Age: Westphalian, Late Carboniferous.
Location: Joggins Formation, Joggins Fossil Cliffs, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Stats: Total length of track measures 48 mm, front foot 1.6 mm and hind foot 2.4 mm.
Extra info: Footprints are the smallest known fossil vertebrate trackway. Was made by a small amphibian estimated to be 8 mm in length, and thought to be a newly metamorphosed juvenile. Variation in the gait (walking to running) and direction have been interpreted as either fleeing a threat or hunting after insects.
