Description
Oil painting of my children, long ago........12x24........1994-1997This was origingally larger, with a unicorn colt in the background and a cat........but it just didn't work. I cropped it so that the main focus wasn't divided, but on the children.
Reference Photo for painting, for those interested [link]

You`re welcome.
Sorry, I realized afterward, it`s not color pencils, but paints... beautiful work anyway.

"When the lessons and tasks are all ended,
And the school for the day is dismissed,
The little one gather around me,
To bid me good-night and be kissed;
On, the little white arms that encircle
My neck in their tender embrace
Oh, the smiles that are halos of heaven,
Shedding sunshine of love on my face." ~Charles Monroe Dickinson
A motley, halcyon painting!

Incredible! I would love to see the whole pic as well, I am a sucker for unicorns, but this stands alone!

The whole thing no longer exists, as I had my hubby cut that section (on masonite board) away with the table saw. The perspective view point just wasn't right. It felt like it was shifting slightly from one view near the children and a slightly different one where the unicorn was. Of course if I was looking for a surreal look............

Did you take any pictures or anything, I would hate to think you lost that forever! Your art is so beautiful and absolutely inspiring...your children are little angels!

LOL, well they are almost grown angels now. They would probably say all grown, at 20 and 22. I have the painting as shown in the submission, but have no photos of the original version.

I like the idea that the manufactured toy (the red ball) was given over for autumn leaves. As always, your use of light is fantastic.
Great piece! A very good memory to have.

Thanks. I really worked to try to get a lot of color shift into the dappled light and shadow, trying to work in warms and cools. I should upload the photo I worked from to show how much I kept and how much I departed from. Hm, and how much I added.

I really love the natural poses and expressions of the children, even in such relaxed positions they are so life-like and animated! The colours and texture of the grass as well as what I take to be shadows of tree branches on the ground are also well done, but I can't help but feel that the path looks a little too flat and textureless. This is, however, a minor point. Excellent painting.

Again, thanks for taking time for a critique. I always felt that the path had a problem, even though I liked the color evolution in the shadows on it.

fantastic, I really admire your patience... oil painting alone is difficult and time consuming add all the detail in the grass ect. and no wonder it took you that long... great job, I love it

There are so many levels that this image works on.
I've spent a while looking at it since you posted it. I very rarly will comment upon something when it is first shown, because I like to check out the little details. Now that it is time to say something, all I can manage is:
I have to agree with wolf02 , in that there is little that needs to be said...

hmmm.....???okay errr, um, well, I WAS expecting something deep and, well, commentary.
Thanks for spending some time with it, that's one. I appreciate the idea of giving something some time to simmer, I'm doing that with a DA poem, that's two. Now for three, um, now that you've set down to say something, um, should I send someone to your house with smelling salts??
thanks

actually, if you count the rule of thirds, it would work it you consider the bench, the unicorn and the two children as all being focus points, so that it takes your eyes across the picture... plus, it's framed by the grass, so it keeps them under control.

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to GalopaWXY [2005-09-30 12:30:15 +0000 UTC]
Actually the unicorn was in the grass to the left of the sidewalk, which curved to the left, and there was a big bush on the right side of the side walk.

very nice, yes it is! good use of light/shadows, great poses too... very plausible!
critique (at your request, and imho): the blades of grass at the right side is far to prominent, leading the eye to the right-top corner....
have to stalk you.

hmmm.........originally, before I cropped it, they led on up to a bush and some more to the left and a cat and more shadows and a black unicorn colt.....when I cropped it I should have considered whether I needed to make any adjustments. I'll have to give it some consideraton.
Thanks for all the comments and critique......never know what someone might spot.
