Favoured to celebrate the recnt announcement of the largest gamma ray burst observed so far. This was thought to be the result of a 20 - 30 solar mass star collapsing catastrophically, blowing much of its mass off into space and leaving the remainder compressed down to a singularity of some kind at the heart of a new black hole. This is the ultimate in compression! Collapsing, rotating plasmas produce intense electro-magnetic fields which constrain much of the energy output to two imensely hot jets firing in opposite directions.

This time the black hole involved is likely to be milions of solar mases rather than mere tens, but the collapse has not been so abrupt and catastrophic and the energy output will continue as long as infalling plasma is still entering and/or being whipped into a tight orbit around the hole at the centre of the galaxy.
