I think if Kubo Tite (correct order?) where more inclined to develop the story a bit, Ichigo could evolve from a great character to an awesome character in a heart-beat. There's so much potential in his role as Substitute-Shinigami/Vizard/Human, trying to control his inner Hollow while remaining human, yet still powerful enough to protect his friends. Sort of what Kishimoto did with Naruto in Shippuden, when he decides not to use the Kyuubi's power ever again after hurting Sakura.
