Description
So before I say anything about these two, I NEED to describe the process and you NEED to read it. So here goes:Very first thing is to take a sheet of illustration board (whatever size you want/need to work on) and tape of the edges so they are water tight. Next you draw/transfer/whatever process you use to get your idea down on the board. Next you pull out your nice and expensive gouache and start painting. The theory is, you paint thick where you don't want ink and you paint thin (or not at all) where you want the ink to stick. Once you think you have everything painted the way you want, let it dry (or use a handy roommate's hair-drier.)
Now comes the fun part. Using a very soft paintbrush, and applying as little pressure as possible, cover the entire painting with ink. Let it dry (DO NOT use your roommate's hair-dryer for this, or it will bake the ink on). When dry, take your painting over to the sink, run it over some cool water, and pray like crazy that it will come out looking okay.
Then use more nice expensive gouache to refine.
My instructor called the technique "gouache-off." I call it "trial of faith."

These two paintings were small experiments I did before doing my assignment. They're scaled up by 200% to show some of the cool texture stuff that happened.

I love the loose, grainy texture this produced. Your trial of faith was abundant indeed.

It's kinda fun to see it work. You do it all with waterproof india ink, so the reason the ink washes off is the gouache underneath. Sometimes you have to scratch at it a little to get it going. It comes off in little flakes, which I guess is why it has that grainy texture.
Fun stuff.
