Description

The weakened Kingdom of Korea destituted in 1949, as the country turned into a republic. From 1949 until 1965, Korea elected 4 governments which adopted a neutral line, allowing Korea to choose whether they wanted to side Americans, Russians or Japanese.

In 1949, the Democratic Republican Party of Korea was elected with Syngman Rhee as its head. Ally of Americans, he supported Korea's economy, damaged by years of war and occupation by China: quickly, Korea became a developed country and has adapted to American culture. However, the 1950's was also a period of inequalities' gap, as an important part of the population has low income (the 20% richest have 50% of the wealth, while the 20% poorest have 4%), especially peasants who saw their land confiscated by rich landlords. In the 1960's, a part began to merge after years of exclusion: the Worker's Party of Korea, led by Kim Il-Sung. This convinced communist became more and more popular with lower classes, students, workers, peasants and intellectuals.

In 1965, the election involving 20 millions of voters showed a new tendency: the Democratic Republican Party is elected for the third time of its history with its representative, Park Chung-Hee, who is strongly supported by Americans. Supported mainly by people in the South, his score is way lower than the previous terms, as the Worker's Party of Korea (WPK) gained a third of Korean's votes thanks to the Northern vote and those living near USSR and Maoist North China ; and the Social Democrat Party of Korea (SDPK) represented by Lee Beom-Seok is declining while still being popular in big cities (Seoul, Pyongyang...) and areas near Manchuria and Japan.

For any, this election would be the last where the DRP would be elected, as Communists gained more popularity.
