Another perspective on this topic:
Think about the following: if humans do build a colony in a far away planet, what do you think it's more probable: that they build a lot of different buildings or that they stick to one standard format that works well? I could bet that they'll go for the standard format. It's much easier (and cheaper and more efficient) to manage a city where all buildings are the same format than it is if all were different. Standardization, generally speaking, provides for a much easier management.

Thanks for the honest comment.
The buildings are intentionally simple and repetitive, to fit the concept of a "colony" (image title). I wanted something like a beehive or similar. Simple and repetitive shapes.
The clouds may not seem high but they are in fact several hundred meters high, like they could be in a real world (this scene was built in Vue, at a real world scale).
The clouds are also there, at that place and altitude, to provide a visual cue of distance, scale and depth.

did you take the idea of the hover car thing from Jack and Daxter? (i used to play that game LOL!)
it looks just like it, i was just wondering.

No, I didn't. I never played the game. I googled for it now, to see what you mean and I think I get it. But no, it wasn't inspired by it.
There are many images of hover bikes around, I wasn't very original on that anyway. Just google for "hover bike" and you'll see what I mean.

This is absolutely beautiful. One day, maybe we'll be able to explore the stars. It's a beautiful world. I wonder how many of them are really out there...? This kind of image really gets my gears turning.

AWESOME!
I did something like this once in Bryce 6 but it sort of lacked this depth.. i love it and the.. whatever it is above just totally makes this shot adding more depth and space to the shot

Thanks!
That structure above is supposed to be a bridge/building, surrounding the entire planet, at a sub-orbital altitude. People live there and it's also a way to quickly connect several parts of the planet and at the same time provide for a quick and cheap way for ships to go into space. But, compositionally, the main reason for the structure to be there is in fact to provide a visual cue for depth, exactly as you perceived it.

How much would one of those fine hoverbike-things go for?

ArthurBlue In reply to Yoji00 [2010-10-02 07:42:39 +0000 UTC]
Almost Mach 1.
It creates a small energy field around it that deflects most of the air flow so you can grab on to the bike.

It's a beautiful image, and the color and atmosphere are terrific.
I love the detail beneath the water's surface - and the figure with the small vehicle really makes this piece - that kind of detail adds tremendously

Thanks!
All buildings and structures were built inside Vue itself, with primitives, booleans, etc. The only non-Vue constructions are the guy and bike, which come from Poser.
