Description
EDIT: Wow! A Daily Deviation! Many thanks to Ellysiumn for featuring it!
EDIT: this image has two companions, that I made later:

This time I bring something a little different from my latest images.
I'll not discuss the meaning or backstory that went through my head, I'll leave that entirely to you, but I'd like to share some of the things that crossed my mind regarding the composition.
One of the concerns I had was to make sure the spatial arrangement of all elements was visually clear for the viewer. A related concern was how to provide the correct sense of scale. With flying elements, such as the balloons, having a sense of spatial arrangement can be tricky since with one static image it's not clear where they are in relation to other objects. That's why one of the balloons is near the central terrain and casts a shadow on it. This cue, even if only caught subconsciously by the viewer, should help to understand the relationship (size and position) between balloons and terrain.
The other balloon casts a shadow on the clouds from where it's coming out, so that should provide a notion where the cloud layer is in relation to the balloons.
There's only one type of house structure (not including the central tower), from near to far, so the viewer can have this cue to gauge the scale of the whole scene. The three men standing in the rim of the central tower should help too, even if they are almost invisible (and that's why they are in the exact center of the image, under heavy light, to make them as visible as possible).
Typically I like to have many elements in my scene, not only because I get carried away with things that pop up in my mind, but also because I like the viewer to spend time analyzing them and going through the image. But sometimes this can make the scene too overloaded and overwhelming. My main method to compensate for it in this piece was to create many heavily shaded areas, to keep the viewer in the brighter areas.
Some of these bright areas also support the composition because some point to the center of the image, again to keep the viewer in the image. Other bright areas needed to be a bit far away for that scale factor I mentioned before.
I hope I stroke the right balance but I'm not sure. You'll be the judge of that.
As always, this is a pure virtual 3D environment, created and rendered in e-on's Vue. There's no photo montage/collage.
