Okay, I have seen a lot of people continuously using "They're just characters!" as an excuse for the characters being unlikable.

If you're going to use this quote to explain that the characters aren't real, that's fine. But as an excuse for their unlikability?! Come on!

Any particular character in mind regarding said topic?

Let's just say characters like Vinnie, Ace, Damian, just to name a few.

I see.

I recall someone who had a dislike to Misty over her arrogance and tomboyish bratty attitude without even considering how she's evolved better than Ash has. And still he calls her, and I quote, 'not just characters written to be hated, like Dolores Umbridge, Pigma Dengar or Misty from Pokemon'. That is just pettiness to a T. I mean, come on, nobody's perfect, and we could see Misty maturing as the series progressed. Where did we see that with Iris? Or Serena for that matter?

You got that all right!

Besides, if a character has no flaws, they'd be flat-out boring. That's a reason some people call Serena a "Barbie Doll".

There is a YouTube video scorning Serena, "Warning worst Pokémon Character Ever made", talking about Pokémon fans calling Serena a "Barbie Doll", which inspired me to suggest calling Ashima the Indian Engine a "Barbie Doll on wheels".

Oho, that sums up Serena well! Nahahahaha!

Oh, Ashima is a Barbie Doll on wheels all right! She maybe kind and sweet, but getting angry or arguing with another engine exists in everyone's vocabulary, which is what makes a character human, and the engines always had human like traits. With Ashima, she didn't. She's just loved for her kindness, charm, design and features. Nothing more. Meanwhile, engines like Thomas, Percy, Gordon, James, Edward, and the originals are (rather 'or') loved by their personas and their human like traits because they're characters children can relate to as well as look up to!

If there’s one thing I take pride in, it’s my reasoning of disliking characters that actually deserve the hate. And Serena and Ashima do deserve the hates. They’re Mary Sues. It seems that almost every Mary Sue introduced is given the best treatments by other fans, and disregard all other fans.

You further summed up why being "nice" doesn't automatically make the character a good character.

Exactly. Even Rey’s better than that.

Within each protagonist, there must be conflict in order to help said protagonist. As the old saying goes ‘nobody’s perfect’. And without conflict, what good is trying to learn?
