Seriously. Not every live action movie that's based on a video game is bad. It's been proven with the Detective Pikachu movie.I will admit, when I heard that the Detective Pikachu movie was going to be made, I was kind of expecting every Pokémon in the movie to look exactly like their game counterparts, but the animators took a different turn with the Pokémon designs. Instead of making them look exactly like their game counterparts, they made them look how they would look if they were real.
And for those of you who are still bitching about Sonic's design in his upcoming movie, WAIT UNTIL THE MOVIE IS RELEASED BEFORE JUDGING!!! Besides, Sonic's design in his upcoming movie is Paramount's own interpretation of how Sonic would look if he were real.

My favorite movie based on a video game is the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film.

I hope you're alright with me asking, but is there a reason you enjoy that Mario movie?

Agreed. I haven't seen Detective Pikachu yet, though I've wanted to for a while now. As for the sonic movie, I personally don't think the problem with his design is because he barely looks like his video game counterpart, it's mainly because his design was straight up very creepy and uncanny looking. Like you said, the characters don't have to look exactly like their video game counterparts, but they still need to look good. Just because something looks realistic doesn't mean it's good.
Take the live-action Scooby Doo or Garfield movies for examples. People hated Scooby Doo and Garfield's designs because they looked uncanny, ugly, lifeless, tire-some and downright creepy (no offense to anyone reading this who liked those movies). Pikachu worked not just because he looked realistic, it's because the designers also made him look cartoony (but still lifelike enough to be convincing), energetic, and most of all, cute (seriously, that face right there just screams adorableness). Sonic on the other hand, had none of those features which is why he looked so horrendous. He didn't look energetic, cartoony or cute, he just looked like some creepy doll from a horror movie.
This is why many people are glad that Paramount is fixing his design. I honestly don't care if he doesn't look exactly like his video game design, just as long as he doesn't look so creepy.
I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just thought I'd point this out.

I agree with the statement of waiting until the movie is released before judging. YouTube user Chris Eden-Green said it with this quote from his video "GAUGE THE ISSUE: Murder On The Orient Express - 2017":
"But don't forget. When Daniel Craig was cast as James Bond, half the onlookers were up in arms, only to be silenced when Casino Royale actually turned out to be really good. So I thought it best to just wait until this film came out and give it a proper chance. After all, you can't judge a book by its cover, you can't understand someone until you get to know them, and you certainly can't declare a new interpretation as dead on arrival when all you've got to go by is a press release and some teasers."
I sincerely hope that lesson gets spread towards some fanbases such as the ThunderCats fanbase complaining about the upcoming ThunderCats Roar and the SpongeBob SquarePants fanbase complaining about Kamp Koral.

Yet that Thundercats reboot hasn't even seen the light of day yet.
The reason people are complaining about Kamp Koral is because Stephen didn't want any Scratchbob spinoffs, and Nick is disrespecting him.
