The tree used to be his safe hiding place when he was a kid. It felt so secure as a shelter: all these well-rooted layes of protection around him. He has grown up a bit. But visiting his former playground, he felt nostalgic for that familiar security and once again allowed himself to slip into the -now tighter- dark hollow space. Only now the space was not protecting but enclosing. The tree moved just a little bit in the wind, and he got trapped.
Is that the same feeling what they call growing up?
