I love all these pics. Wish you had made the rupees into tiny gems, though. A gem-based currency would be cool.

I wanted this design to be "medieval" and "realistic", therefore I chose the coins.
A gem based currency would face serious problems, because the gems would not be officially minted, of course, and could be created by anyone that had access to a mine and would know how to cut them. Also the intrinsic value of the gem itself would make them too valuable to be used on a day-to-day basis even for the smallest ones. They would be impractical also, and could be lost so easily (imagine dropping a tiny gem in a grass field or through the cracks in the floor, etc.) Not a great method for money I would say.
Thank you for the comment.
Cheers.

Oh, I definitely agree that justifying gems as currency would be pretty hard. That's partially why the idea interests me. It would require a society which has many skilled gem-cutters, who can examine a gem's quality readily. And then, it would have to be something akin to a mining town, where local inflation makes little rubies a common form of currency (or this land has incredibly rich gem deposits). You'd need the gems to be on the scale of gold coins, rather than the silver or copper of low class commerce.

Notably, a lot of lower-class people through much of history, and still in some places, have continued to use food and barter systems rather than coins. A lot of people continued to get paid in beer. So it could be rupees, gems, were a noble currency, used more for purchasing luxury items like swords, warhorses and the latest armour.

Anyway, that's my argument for the idea. What do you think? I was intending to have a gem-based system of currency for dwarven communities which mine them, but I can just drop it if it falls flat.

Also, thank you for the thoughtful and well constructed reply, as well as the picture. It's hard to find people able to discuss matter like this.

You made a good point here and a solid defence of your concept.Β
Indeed, nothing beats a difficult concept that has been fleshed out in a believable and exciting way.
I would actually want to see something like this being developed further. Well done!

That's very encouraging, thank you. I'll look deeper into details like the economies of mercenaries fighting over diamond mines, for inspiration. It's likely dwarves would have some sort of foreigner script for visitors to pay with, similar to how China used to for tourists, to make sure they don't exploit local inflation to turn a profit off the gems.
