EDIT: I have revised this picture-- I gave it more detail and contrast.
IN ADDITION, on April 9th, 2011 this picture won a "superior" art award AND a "Spotlight" art award at the MSHSL state High School League Visual Arts Festival! The Spotlight award was an award that each judge gave to a single piece of artwork, so only about 5 people got one. C:
This design scored a total of 2.56 on Threadless! I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that it will get printed, but I'm thinking at this point that it won't. Oh, well!
It also won 2nd place overall at a the Annual Art Invitational at Shattuck St. Maryβs! Yay!
SOOOOO This is a picture that I've been working on for awhile now. Don't ask what it's about, because its' meaning really doesn't go much deeper than "I drew swirls and then a bird and this was the result". XD
It's been awhile since I've done lineart, and I actually used the pencil tool on Adobe Illustrator for a lot of this and then drew the rest in Photoshop. I think it turned out pretty well!
I've been drawing a lot of corvids lately. Autumn just makes me want to draw corvids.

I love the swirls and the lighting. The dramatic green glow works really well - you've got its direction/mood perfectly. I feel that the shadows could use a little more depth though, especially on the branch beneath the bird. Perhaps introduce a little more red/dark brown into that area - or use purple if it suits the mood better. The grey shadows make the picture look washed out - which creates a nice effect, but means that the impact of the green swirls is lessened. Your lineart style is lovely though. The wing looks gorgeous, as do the swirls, and I think the expression in the bird's beak/pose is great. You might want to tweak the feet though, as at the moment they look somewhat 2D. I think it's partly the aforementioned shading, but they don't quite seem to be gripping the round branch, making the perspective on that whole area a little off-kilter. I would also urge you to be a little bolder with your mark-making on the bird itself. You've got all the shading beautifully - both anatomy and lighting wise - but I feel your painting needs to be more 'opaque'. It loses some of its impact as each layer of shading is too transparent. Try pressing harder with the pen tablet or working into the shading more and I'm sure that'll soon improve.
But I sound far too critical! This is a very good piece - the perspective, drama and atmosphere work really well. There are just a couple of areas where some tightening up could be useful and help with the impact of the piece, but other than that - great work! Well done ^ ^

Looking back on this, I really agree with what you said about the shading and depth-- it definitely needs to be a little more opaque. At the time I submitted this as a tee shirt design on Threadless, and I think maybe that was why I held back a bit.
I'll add some more shading and mess around with it a little bit more to see how it looks! C:

Wow, that's looking so much better! I think you may need a little more saturated green shadow on the glowy bits now to balance the shadow on the crow... and maybe a little on the right hand side of the branch. But this looks really good now! VERY well done - you evidently have more patience than I to actually go back and change things XD Great work!

One of the main reasons I went back to edit this piece was because I was planning on entering it into a state art competition. C: The fact that I had some wonderful advice from you really helped, too! I'm very glad I did go back and change it a bit, because it ended up winning two awards at the competition... β₯
