Description
My inclusion of the character Shade the Echidna in Camelot: Kingdom of the Wind. Shade doesn’t DIRECTLY correspond to Lyonesse in Arthurian Legend. Lyonesse is the name of a kingdom, most prominently, as well as a character in the legends. My character kept Lyonesse’s name, but her characteristics are a combination of two! Which appears to be my pattern, ^^” . She’s based off of both Arthurian Lyonesse, a Princess and daughter of wise enchantress, and Lady Orgeluse, who has a much more interesting story and winds up wedding Gawaine. Orgeluse is called “Haughty Maiden” in the stories, because when she encounters Gawaine, she’s super rude to him and keeps snubbing all his romantic advances! She even, eventually, sends him into danger on purpose. Then he finds out she’s only pushing him away because anyone who tries to be her husband gets killed by this awful knight named Guiromelant. Anywho, Gawaine winds up winning Lyonesse’s affection and they get married. Something similar to this romance will happen in Kingdom of the Wind, with the main idea being that Lyonesse the Echidna develops feelings for Sir Gawaine the Echidna, but she knows that is he ever returns to Carmelide her father will find a way to kill him, so she keeps pushing away his friendship.
ANYWHO!
Princess Lyonesse is the echidna heir to the throne of Carmelide, and the only child of King Brutus (that she knows of.) Unlike traditional princesses, she is not confined to court and often does his bidding as well as any Knight of the Round Table might do for their own King. This is because Lyonesse has an obsession with keeping her father safe, and a deep faith in his judgement. It’s probably a result of her mother, Queen Gringamore’s, mysterious death when Lyonesse was little. Combine that loyal protectiveness with strict self-discipline, and you have this Viking-warrior-Princess of a character. (My take on Shade’s thousands-of-years devotion to Imperator Ix in Dark Brotherhood.)
So, Lyonesse is not only a Princess who sits in on her father’s most secret council (first outfit from the left,) but she’s also a warrior rivaled only by Warlord Leodegrance in skill (second outfit.) To her unending discontent, King Brutus never allows his daughter to fight in any wars or lead any soldiers; she is always disguised and instructed never to reveal herself when going on a violent errand for him in her armor. Lyonesse believes this rule is given because her father fears for her safety. In reality, King Brutus just doesn’t want anyone to know who his personal Knight is so that he can keep exploiting his own heir without the Kingdom of Carmelide’s collective judgement. Besides, he’s always found power in being mysterious.
When Brutus and Leodegrance plot to destroy Camelot’s new King, Sonic the Hedgehog, they do it openly in front of the Lady of the Sunset, Guinevere. This was done on purpose; Guinevere was known for being obsessed with keeping the peace. They manipulated Guinevere to believe that the only alternative to war was finding a noble person from Carmelide to marry King Sonic and unite the kingdoms. Lyonesse, in on the plan, refused, and Guinevere did exactly what they predicted: she offered herself as wife of their kingdom’s rival. This got Guinevere out of Carmelide’s court, but the evil plot went much deeper than that. Lyonesse was sent on her first mission out of the kingdom, going to Camelot in disguise as meek Elibel, (third outfit) Guinevere’s humble Lady in Waiting.
In this disguise, Lyonesse could act freely in the innermost part of Camelot’s court. She was close to King Sonic, and, also as King Brutus predicted, was able to remain in the castle when Sonic went questing to avoid having to marry his new fiancée. While Guinevere began to learn about her new home and bond with Sir Lancelot, Lyonesse gathered intel. When the moment was right, she accomplished the climax of Brutus’ scheme: freeing Merlina from Camelot’s dungeons and framing Guinevere for it. All along, Brutus wanted to get Guinevere out of the way, learn more about the state of Camelot’s monarchy, and most importantly, bring Merlina to his own court in one fell swoop.
Lyoness executed her part in this scheme flawlessly, even getting the drop on Merlina’s guard, Sir Bors, and fleeing back to Carmelide without incident. Guinevere never realized her shy Lady in Waiting was actually her Princess. Lyonesse returned to Carmelide’s court without changing her opinion that Guinevere was annoying and overly emotional…but she was less secure in her own loyalty and doubting her father for the first time. King Sonic was so charming and impressed her with his determination to always do his own version of the right thing. He hardly seemed like the weakling who hoarded magical lakes that her father always ranted about when discussing Camelot. She also enjoyed her time observing the Knights of the Round Table. For now, Lyonesse remains loyal to King Brutus and nobody in Camelot knows who she is…but her mistrust of Merlina grows while the Wizard conspires with her father, and her own reluctance to topple Camelot begins to frighten Princess Lyonesse.
