Description
I'm proud to announce the tutorial for my painting Cougar Intensity is now available for you. A special thanks to reneedicherri at Autodesk for allowing me to give you all a peak behind the scenes at one of my favorite paintings to date. Inside you'll find a bit about how I go about composing the image, choosing color and how I get the textures I'm looking for in my paintings. While you are at it, take a look at the Hero Challenge Sketchbook is running this month! The astounding creature designer and Paleo artist Terryl Whitlatch asks "What's your perfect pet?" Get noticed by her and enter the challenge! I think you can all guess what my perfect pet would be. After you do that, make sure you check me out at all of the regular hangouts for more of my WIP's, artwork, and general nonsense!

Love the art, Love the Artist. Hate what is done here.
The fact this is sent to premium members is a sham. The fact DA lies and says the promoted group shows important community things when it shows the highest bidder is a sham. The fact that they show this like it's not a product add is a sham. Which as an artist angers me the most. The artist clearly spent a lot of time to get to this level. The fact that I'm sure all he's got out of advertising for a product is getting credit for the art used in it is a knife into my heart. His art deserves to be seen and the quality of his art while selling his artistic life and quality to get his name out there meanwhile Sketchbook Mobile I'm sure will make tens of thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousands off of this add and the artist will be lucky if he even gets a few free products.

Nice work.
I wish we could have found it in a way other than via the Promoted group's method. It's not the way I would have hoped to be promoted.
Best of luck to you.

Why did this appear in my messages? I'm not a member of this Promoted group thing this work was submitted to…
[edit] Never mind, I see I have to pay DA to not see these… Nice work though...

Thanks WingedSonar and sorry, it's one of those DA things. While I'm happy it was chosen, I'm catching a lot of grief for it. all I wanted to do was share my process.

Wow, that's awful. DA unwittingly painting a target on your head. I didn't mean to come off angry, though, I was just confused until I did minor digging and found entirely different people were the ones to ask. :/ I'm not used to having an unpaid account, so all these ads and promos in my inbox are very new too me. I hope people don't get too stupid about it.

I'm more angry over the fact it still shows up even on premium members who pay to have no adds. If it was an artist who paid for it with money of their own I'd be all for it. Difference here is I assume he got a large chunk of the money if not all for having the sketchbook mobile both in the title and description. As far as I'm concerned both the artist and premium members are getting jipped here. The artist is catching grief and is being used to sell a product that I'm sure isn't getting a kickback on sales for. It's the equivalent of a huge movie star looking for donations to do a movie for free that he could easily afford while keeping all the profits to himself. I love the art here but the fact that it's stamped as important to the community instead of what it is, which is an add for a product.

Yes, now I remember having a paid account and getting something akin to this in my inbox. I think that's why so many people get dramatic on the updates and other things they don't have a choice in turning off. It is a bit obnoxious, especially if you pay for the service. Then it's just downright off.
As for using him, I'm all too familiar with the idiotic "but don't you feel it's a great opportunity and exposure for your work?" mentality. Bad taste in my mouth there. : P

Oh it's ok, you didn't seem angry. And honestly it's not a big deal. I figured I'd let ya know why you saw it that's all. For the most part it seems people are getting what intended from the tutorial, and in the end that's all that matters to me. How it's distributed, well it's out of my hands for now. I off of premium for a bit and didn't realize how bad the ads had gotten. I can see why people are like what the heck is this?

Yeah, it's become pretty bad with their self-advertisement and using art to do so. I can just hear the check-your-sense-of-entitlement types squirming now as they sense a disturbance in the Love-DA Force. And we haven't even gotten into how the thieves and spammers abuse the loopholes in this sites decade-long coding issues for yet more spamming and phishing scam attempts from outside sources.
ANYway, hopefully it's died down for you now, and greater amounts of praise will come from it. It certainly appears that you've worked hard to earn some positive attention for the skills you have. Cheers and peace out.

Nice bumping into you here, Sonar. Long time no see.
While I'd like my work to be seen a little more than it is, I don't think this Promoted group is the way to do it. I don't want people thinking I'm part of DA's plan to extort money from the community. That's not the kind of attention I want or need for my art.

Piehamster In reply to ThatAnnoyingRabbit [2015-01-28 16:21:37 +0000 UTC]
Yeahh, so I see.
Unfortunately (like pretty much everything they think is a good idea these days), most people including myself think that's it's annoying and undesirable.
And from what I heard, it even forces you to have premium membership to unwatch the group (if you watch it)...
It's just yet another step to drive users away (I already know a few great artists who stopped bothering or just left the site).

ThatAnnoyingRabbit In reply to Piehamster [2015-01-28 16:38:22 +0000 UTC]
Yep, you have to have premium to hide all the updates it gives. Which makes sense really, it works the way a lot of ads do, they show you stuff they believe some users may find interesting and to wish it away you have to pay making getting a premium account more enticing to buy.

Piehamster In reply to ThatAnnoyingRabbit [2015-01-28 17:27:17 +0000 UTC]
Well, I think it's pretty low.
Besides, with the way this site has been going recently I couldn't ever imagine myself buying premium membership... There are better sites (like Pixiv) that I would rather spend money on.
The general feedback on the "Promoted" page is a pretty good indicator of how the users feel.
But, DA don't care about its users, anyway. They keep doing what they want.

ThatAnnoyingRabbit In reply to Piehamster [2015-01-28 17:45:03 +0000 UTC]
Those mainly consist of those who don't like it, the majority of
those who do like or don't mind it don't always feel inclined to
say so all the time.
Of course they keep doing what they want, it's their site and now matter
what if they feel it could be beneficial in anyway to them they will do it.
That's why in the tos it states they can change, modify, and even shut the
whole site down without warning if we like it or not.
A company will do what they can to make money and one way is to create things
that will make buying their stuff more enticing and a lot of people do spend the
cash for it. PMS are just there to make the site more convenient for everyone if they
wish anyway imo.

Piehamster In reply to ThatAnnoyingRabbit [2015-01-29 09:51:25 +0000 UTC]
Well, yes. They can indeed do whatever they want.
But, they shouldn't be surprised when they discover how many users they are losing. Because user feedback is essential, and DA are ignoring it...

With the amount of users that sign up everyday it pretty much makes up
for the small amount who decide to leave because of it so honestly I don't
see dA worrying over it at all, especially when they feel this is best. Same
thing happened when dA changed the layout, a lot of people claimed they
would leave and dA would suffer over it but half of them didn't actually leave
and tons of new people signed up anyway.
