I think they're one of the more popular Disney femslash pairings, actually! (Others include Snow White/Aurora, Belle/Esmeralda, and Meg/Ariel, in my experience, although I've seen pretty much every variation in existence!!) But it's always nice to find fellow shippers, and yeah, I think they could totally works.

The princesses that best represent myself (Elsa) and my sister (Merida; Brave also came out on her birthday, which is a plus). I didn't know they were a thing.

I think they get paired because they both learn about the importance and power of love, and because Merida would be brave (heh) enough to not be scared of Elsa and her powers, and might draw Elsa out of her shell somewhat.
