1/7-Scale True-Form Midna
*****************************
Active Work-in-Progress, WIP Z13
Reference pictures: I am most grateful for the fantastic support from both
~Fumbles-McStupid and
*DarklordIIID .
Both provided me with high-resolution reference pictures from their digital models of TF Midna.
Midna is a character from the Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess Nintendo Wii game.
********
2/11/2010 Update, Foil Armature and Rough Body Form
Well, I've decided to make TF Midna in 1/7-scale. I really would have liked to do 1/8-scale, but after studying the complicated patterns on her cape and body, I opted to go with a slightly larger size as a consideration to make the painting steps easier. To give a sense of how big 1/7-scale is, the reference pictures were printed on A-size paper, which is 11 inches tall.
I use crumbled/balled up heavy-gauge aluminum foil for armature. The copper pins are made from clothes hanger. The third pic dated 2/11/10 shows the basic pose I would like to proceed with - those with vested interest please feel free to provide feedback. At this point, the pose is easiest to change.
2/12/2010 Update, Revise Pose
Left and right arms revised per feedback.
2/21/2010 Update, Refine Pose + More Definition
Revised the leg pose to add a bit more motion per feedback. Layered on more form definition on the torso and legs. Pinned to base so that the figure is now free-standing.
2/22/2010 Update, Fix Joints
Putty at the following joints to temporarily anchor the pose: hip joints, arm joints, and neck joint. Once past this point, no more major changes to the pose. Will take into consideration comments on the pose till end of Feb. Then will move on...
3/10/2010 Update, Rough-Form Body Shapes
Was quite sick last several weeks, thus no sculpting work...
Rough-formed face. Trimmed, shaved and layered-on putty to refine the overall body shape and curves. Her hands & feet are obviously still in 'blob' stage; they will be detailed later. Major work to re-tool all five joints (head, shoulders, hips).
3/28/2010 Update, Skirt + Cape
- The head/hands are still just 'blobs' (haven't started detail definitions), so no further comments on the head and the hands are necessary.
- For some reason, had a lot of trouble with joints (shoulders, neck, hip), which are finally done after many re-do's.
- Enlarged her breasts by +1 size to better match the ref pics.
- Deliberately left her right thigh fuller; can be trimmed down later.
- Started the skirt work by sizing up the area using aluminum foil. The putty was rolled and stretched to match the relative size, then trimmed to shape.
- Back view shown as requested.
- Cape is a huge piece. Started the main part of it to get a general shape definition, and as foundation for extension.
4/3/2010 Update, Rough-Form Cape
- Some projects flow smoothly and I can feel sculpting mojo at my fingertips. Unfortunately this project isn't one of them... Virtually every step is fraught with off-lines, re-do's and slow progress...
- The cape, being huge in size, is turning out to be a huge challenge. It was impossible for me to do it in one-shot, one-piece (as I generally like to do when sculpting fabric pieces). Doing it by adding sections is painfully unnatural and incurring lots of rework. At this point, I'm not even sure that I can cast the cape piece...
- Anyway, the progress to-date:
- Tried to size the overall flattened pattern of the cape using aluminum foil.
- Back view showed extension seamlines.
- Then, added rough-form of hood.
- Then, extended the cape some more. The cape on her left side is still unfinished.
- Then, extended the sleeve covers.
- Lots of trimming and patching work next.

That's an amazing process. I was thinking of making something similar for a project, and I think your armature gives me a better idea for building it.

It's unfortunate that damn cloak has shut you down so badly. Believe me, I know your pain, very, very well.
I hope you finish this some day, I know I'll be the first in line for a cast.

Lost sculpting mojo for a few months now, so everything's sitting on the shelf gathering dust.

hm. looks a bit very inconvinient. why not simply putting the wire frame firm on the wood. in one piece, except the head and hands maybe. ... hm.

Wow that was a quick process, looks lovely. I have yet to see the true form of Midna, but comparing it to the picture it's looking very gd. ^_^

Oh, and I don't know if it's because you've not finished the cloak, but the part below her arm is not open like that, it's connected like a sleeve, you know?
Also, I think her cloak would look prettier if you left it more fluttering, like on the wip.

Don't you think it'd look better if her "skirt" flowed in a way that it doesn't cover her legs?
It's turning out great! It's so interesting seeing the process.

Sounds like this one is a challenge. But that'll just make it all the more awesome in the end. The hard ones are the ones that usually turn out better. So long as you keep doing your best, I'm sure it'll come together!
I think it looks amazing btw.

It looks like the curse of Midna has found you. There's just something about her character design, it makes everything run not so smoothly, and sometimes downright frustrating.
If it's any consolation, it took me a whole week just to draft a decent pattern for her cloak, and even then I had help from a friend. I'm sure you'll figure it out, it looks really good so far.

What you're experiencing is called the curse of Midna. It spans all artistic media and is unavoidable when dealing with Twili Form Midna. Accept your fate and push through.

A lot of work and serious aching hands & eyes going through this! I do BJD (( Ball Jointed Dolls/Anime dolls)) and that in itself is very time consuming. Be it airbrushing, hand painting, etc. A lot of others miss on what is really going on with the character being made by hand, rather than done so dam cheap & materials that only break right away. Where as the tools real artist use in their works & crafts are nothing but full details and constant coordination; appreciation, hands-on material work.
OK I stop.. its past 3AM I must head off to bed here

Here is a link to my dolls there are only 3 pics for now [link] Until I grab the camera and take more pics. I have to repaint 2 or 3 of my doll's faces. I'm still waiting for my 3 other BJD to arrive maybe Mon Or Tues.

I guess I'm gonna have to directly ask them for the the Midna refs, huh? I'll ask them myself (I KNOW who you got them from - I just wanted to get the refs directly from YOU so I wouldn't have to ask them for it *forgive my laziness, but I've got STUFF to do - college, love life, school life - it gets HECTIC for me, y'know?* But... if I can go on DA and spend FOREVER on it, I guess it wouldn't hurt me to ask those two devs for the refs, amirite? Please, do forgive my indolence, I meant NO HARM by it whatsoever *has a split headache right now*).

Thank you for the comments.
I would not be able to forward those ref pics to you, as they are not mine to give. So asking the source is the only way to get them... Sorry.
Well, oooh, hectic love life, do share your stories!

Oh, you're welcome!
Alright, I understand - I'll ask those two myself *is kinda a n00b when it comes to stuff like this, so... so sorry * - luckily, I don't think it will be too much of a problem to just ask them.
Ah, my "hectic life" is so personal, I can't tell you everything right here and now, so I'll just give you a summary - I just barely found a "love interest," and they were moving too fast but I was being distant and too slow... so, we got into fights and there's still complications and troubles between us so... we've still got a lot to work on, but I love them so much, I'm more than happy to give them a chance!
College/school life is hard for me too since I've been studying for midterms and semester papers are due and I haven't had time to study - I've been doing my best but...
Here's where it gets very personal; seems that my "mental illnesses" are becoming obstacles for me as of late (sadly, I can't tell you what they are here since... I don't want everyone on DA knowing about them *only very close friends knows which illnesses I have*), so while I'm still giving it my all despite the circumstances... it's really REALLY hard for me to find time for myself, even now -- LUCKILY, DA has helped me with that (but it's also made my "illnesses" worse in the past if you know what I'm saying - so I deactivated my old account, but now I'm back!
).
So yeah, there's my life as of late for you... hope you enjoyed.
