Description
In 1991, the USSR was undergoing "perestroika " started by Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. On August 20 a treaty has to be signed, under which the USSR has to become a Union of Sovereign States (i.e. a confederation), but a group of high-ranking Soviet officials did not like perestroika, because if the new treaty had been signed they would not have remained in power. These called themselves as "GKChP " (State Committee for Emergency Situation).

On August 19 they tried to oust Gorbachev, seize power & stop perestroika, this was accompanied by the entry of troops into Moscow & a confrontation in front of the White House . Thousands of people gathered at the White House to stop the GKChP & defend Democracy. Among those who came were Andrei Makarevich , Boris Akunin , Alexei Balabanov & Mikhail Khodorkovsky .
