On April 25, 2024, the news appeared on Steam that Garry's mod addons dedicated to nintendo games will be removed from the Gmod workshop for allegedly violating the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), i.e. nintendo allegedly filed a report for copyright infringement, to which gmod creator and Facepunch Studios owner Harry Newman, after numerous requests to verify the validity of the complaint, replied that it was definitely a complaint from Nintendo itself.
And it would seem that everything is quite simple, big companies like Nintendo are very fussy about copyright and distribution of their content, But, there is other information that users have received from the Internet. On Reddit , they claim it was some troll named “Aaron Peters”. There is information that this jackal has recently (probably since early January) been sending false reports on addons and banning them with the help of a fake dmca. Also users report that this scarecrow has been doing this for about 10 years. All this is indicated by inconsistencies in the registration of the domain name from which the Email came, as well as the silence of Nintendo itself, but the creator of Gmod'a is skeptical of this version.

Now, there is at least one piece of YouTube footage from March 4th saying that it was the troll “aaron” (later updated on April 25th).

Verdict

This incident leaves a rather unpleasant incident because... all the addons in garry's mod into which a lot of effort was invested were simply removed by some noname, at once. This makes you wonder - is it worth investing your energy in further projects or addons? Perhaps tomorrow some troll hiding behind a fake dmca may force you to remove all addons in gmod (& maybe sfm). So what now? Such precedents make you think twice before you start creating an addon in garry's mod or sfm. But it is addons that give old games (garrys' mod is now 18 years old, sfm - 12 years old) the opportunity to stay afloat (as for example with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games series), without addons, some old & still popular games would have died back in 2015, and Now these creatures are inhumanly dancing on bones in front of the creators of gmod addons who attracted the masses to the game itself.
