Is there a brush specifically for making those scales? If so, I'll buy!

The course does go over the technique I used for the scales.  Its definitely way faster than drawing them individually

Is there a place we can just buy your brushes ?

arvalis In reply to Annasko [2015-04-16 05:22:48 +0000 UTC]

You can get them on my patreon or from either of my tutorials available through my site.  I dont feel comfortable selling them outright since I didnt make most of them, they are just tossed in as a bonus on some things.

I actually have a hard time believing in this one. Huge belly -> lots of weight -> difficult flight. No apparent way to fold the wings. Spikes on articulations. Tail maybe a bit long/thick.
I don't think that thing could fly.

arvalis In reply to Oroum [2015-04-16 05:16:23 +0000 UTC]

Its overdeveloped pectorals, not a belly.  The problem you run into with massive flying creatures is that you need bigger pectorals to support bigger wings and then bigger wings to support the bigger pectorals, so it just keeps growing.  It is impossible for something like most dragon designs to fly, but its about the suspension of disbelief which I believe this works with.  Its wings are modeled after birds and here is an image of its folded wings 40.media.tumblr.com/34adb02c37… The wings fold just fine as you can tell.  I'm not sure what spikes on articulations you are talking about and the wing struts are flexible with a joint at the connection point to the arm.

Oroum In reply to arvalis [2015-04-16 16:44:33 +0000 UTC]

Then, my problem is that the belly looks more like inflated than muscled. On birds, the difference isn't a bother because of the feathers, but with leather-y skin, muscles should look a bit more defined in my opinion.
Also, there is the general weight problem. Birds are mostly very light and very fragile to allow flight. With the same bone structure, something this size couldn't survive. Landing could shatter bones.

Really sounds like you have more of a problem with dragons in general.

Oroum In reply to arvalis [2015-04-16 22:00:41 +0000 UTC]

I like dragons, they're badass, kinda cliché but a good one ... It's just the idea of trying to make them realistic. Dragons are cool, but they'd just fuck science in the ass by existing.

I agree, the wings bother me a lot here.

arvalis In reply to EsorAurora [2015-04-16 05:19:45 +0000 UTC]

Maybe this answers some questions 40.media.tumblr.com/34adb02c37… and if not maybe you could elaborate as to what your problem with the design is.

EsorAurora In reply to arvalis [2015-04-16 05:31:51 +0000 UTC]

Hmm the wings look quite a bit better in the sketch there. I'm happy to see a better view. I think the preview I was commenting on just didn't give a good view of the wings—they looked a bit.. flat? I think that because the design isn't the conventional wing design I wasn't able to form a good idea of how the rest of the wing looked and I just saw two big fins.

Don't get me wrong, you're work often looks quite believable and that's a big reason I'm a fan of it. Sorry, I probably shouldn't have just left the curt comment that I did

Adding on to the others, don't forget about bees! Scientists have been saying for years that it should be impossible for bees to fly. There's a lot of sources on why they're able to ((and people are still disputing those sources)), but for the most part, it just comes down to how the creature would move its wings.

StreetArt123 In reply to Oroum [2015-04-15 23:45:39 +0000 UTC]

I think that's actually supposed to be it's chest.
And having large, powerful chest muscles might help lift such a stocky-built creature.
Also, though his wings look small in this picture, in the original they are actually much bigger.

I do agree with you on how it's supposed to fold it's wings. Maybe it doesn't fold them, like the dragons in Skyrim.
And maybe the wings are designed more for fluttering than flight. Like a fowl.

TotemEye In reply to Oroum [2015-04-15 23:37:49 +0000 UTC]

There are joints in the wings if you take a closer look c:
Also, huge belly doesn't necessarily means big weight, frog can make it's belly big but it's filled with air! Some birds have really wide chest, despite being really lightweight! (Their bones are empty inside)
I see your point but it's nice to consider some interesting options!
