When Asriel died from the magic extraction being too strong on him, he faded away into the program's codings; but his consciousness did not.

As time went on he realized he could spawn himself back into the program's small world but only as small weak entities. One of those, was being a flower. When Asriel faded into the program's coding, Chara.exe was able to slightly infect Asriel, hence making him a virus as well. Although after becoming a virus he'd turned much more hostile, he can still occasionally glitch back to his old self in terms of personality, making him sweet and caring.

Napstablook is a non harmful entity to the program. He runs as if he does not exist within the program, which leads to making him be kind of invisible to most other characters; except to mettaton and Frisk.
