Started as a value study and ended up having a somewhat finished piece. I've never been much into painting greyscales first (and haven't figured out a truly effective way to do it), but I'm pretty happy with how this one came out. Check the process here!Related content

I'm impressed by the detail you give to the creature's eye and its surrounding!
The varying colors are spectacular too! The warms really flow well with the composition and the cools add an intricate complexity!
What I can't ignore is that subtle lighting on the fur! Man, i can just keep staring at this for hours!

Thanks a lot John! I thought it'd be nice having the eye as a focal point, so making that area stand out was key. I was also trying to see how far I could push the colours without making them look too synthetic, glad you liked it!Β
Oh and as for the ligting, I think it just had to be there. I've come to love subsurface scattering and I try to use it whenever possible.
