Description
My first and second try with prong setting with wires. The second one is the one in the front.I made these when I first started to work with wires so they're very rough. I do like how the design for the second one came out though. In my first attempt the ring came out too small, it only fit on my pinky XDDD .. and my ring size for my middle finger (which the second ring fits perfectly) is about a 5.5 .. so yea.. came out way too small.
Made with beadsmith craft wire and re-purposed cubic zirconia for the second one and for the first, some re-purposed jewel from .. somewhere XD

Do you remember what gauge the wire is?
I tried prongs and it didn't go so well. xD Maybe I'll try again.

Um, for the braided band I used 20 and then I think I used 24 for the rest (the prongs and for binding everything together). I don't like it when rings are chunky XD I think I used 20 and 22 for my first attempt, which is why it looks a lot chunkier
What tutorial were you using? And good luck dood ^____^

No prob
Oh XDD I tired not using a tutorial .. and failed miserably Lol, mainly cause I just started wire wrapping and had no idea how to get the band and setting together without the wires coming out and stuff XD

my favorite is the one in the front, because it is smaller where the zirconia is put. i like very much the work you did with this ring, how you interlaced the wires !

Yea, I like it better for the same reason, I don't like it when rings look chunky. The first one the wire gauges were too close in size so it looks really heavy =T That and I used a cheap looking costume crystal thing for the jewel since I was just trying it for the first time XD
Thank you!

Nice! I like the idea of prongs and wirework, never got the hang of it. Wish we could see the one behind a bit better, the braiding looks interesting.

I saw a tutorial on jewelrylessons.com and I had to learn it XDD I love rings <3
Lol, I didn't especially like the one in the back so that's why I chose the pic with that field of depth. It's actually the same braiding as the one in the front, just without all the vine-y stuff
here's the tutorial btw [link]

magpiesmiscellany In reply to ashenXnight [2010-03-29 01:27:52 +0000 UTC]
Intro to metalwork. I'm pretty much all self taught, so in the fall I took a class to learn (in theory) hoew to solder and use assorted tools properly, so I'm continuing that.

Oh cool! I just applied to FIT for jewelry design, so hopefully I'll be learning that stuff in the fall ^___^
Your wire wraps are really nice btw. I especially like your geode and garnet ones

FIT? This is nothing fancy, just a once a week for a month or two. Most I can afford at the moment.
Thanks, I've managed to gather quite the geode collection stash

Fashion Institute of Technology
Oo, how much are classes? FIT is about 1800 per term for Associates - which is what jewelry design is considered
Well, as long as you learn something useful, it's not a waste XD
Coool~
Where do you get your geodes if you don't mind me asking

magpiesmiscellany In reply to ashenXnight [2010-03-29 20:39:36 +0000 UTC]
Ouch. It's a bit over 200 for 6 2 hr classes.
No problem. I get most at small mineral shows, like the type rock and mineral clubs put on at local high schools. Of course, none are terribly local to me! The polish isn't as nice as ones you'd get at gems shows, but it's great in that you can get more and experiment. They sell the slices with the tumbled rocks for kids

Ooo That's pretty good =] Have fun ^____^
XD I see. I should seriously need to figure out what sort of conventions we have here... considering it's nyc there should be a lot of stuff..
Well, the drive is worth it when you find what you want XDD
So how much is a good price range usually ... (although I get that it would depend of size and quality too) I'm pretty new to all this and I have no idea what's a good price for anything lol

magpiesmiscellany In reply to ashenXnight [2010-03-30 22:31:24 +0000 UTC]
Oh you must have shows somewhere around there. Try googling NYC and mineral clubs. I'm thinking you probably have better things than the tiny things I go to in a city! I don't think I've spent much over $10 on any geode slices. Better polish would probably run you more, but since most of my stuff isn't super polished yet I don't worry about it and try more to get interesting slices. I guess something to keep in mind starting out is that sometimes getting more unusal stones you can get a better quality for a lower price. But then you run across the fact that lots of people only want the super simple stones they know well. SO it's a bit of a trade off either way.
Do you watch He has a NYC club and would be better able to give you pointers for the city and environs.

Yes XD I looked into it a little bit a couple of months ago, I'll have to check again lol
Maybe XD I've only seen like small halves of geodes in like 2 stores though, I guess I'll have to search around more, might be more expensive here though o_0
Oo True, true- well I guess when it comes down to it, it also depends on your personal style
Ok, so around $10 is ok XDD
Thanks for being so helpful
No I haven't, he actually just messaged me a little while ago after your message XD I'll ask him about that stuff, Thanks ^___^
