Description
Some fan art for the old harryhausen film, The Valley of Gwangi. The paint job here isn't great, but it gets the point across. Gwangi is the big predator, an allosaur. He was descovered in a mexican valley, captured, and brought into a circus, with predictable results.Related content

Thanks! I'm intending to do an update on Gwangi somewhere along the line--something that maintains the classic, slightly monstrous feeling.Β

This picture is a combination of two things I love. Dinosaurs and cowboys are the best. I have never seen a drawing that includes both until today. www.affordablecarpetcleaningutβ¦ Β

I remember this fun old movie. LIked how you changed gwanji to be a "Walking with Dinosaurs" era Allosaurus instead of the cinematic version. Harryhausen said that he blended elements of T. Rex and Allosaurus together for Gwanji, resulting in a unique but familiar-looking creature. So I suppose your version is a "purer form". The colors worked out well, if a little muted.

How does it have WWD era qualities to it? I'm not being an ass, just really interested in what you said. I LOVE the WWD versions but I want to hear a little more about what you mean

Your allosaurus (which as stated earlier was actually one, not a pocket rex like the movie) has a lot of the more recent features which got nicely showcased in WWD and other such contemporary programs. The eyebrow "horns", the emphasis on the nasal cavity, the perpetual forward-slung stance with balancing tail, those really stood out. That and the one finger claw arranged to make it a quasi-thumb, I had never noticed that until WWD.
As a further note, your allosaurus (again unlike Gwanji) is full-size. They were quite large, actually able to give most of the tyrannosaurs competition if they ever met. Harryhausen was actually quite clever in building Gwanji to reflect both evolutionary adaptation, and the needs of a movie to have a therapod carnosaur that could be captured by cowboys. It maeks me wonder how you did take on a painting of the allosaurus attack/confrontation at the inn towards the end of Birds of Prey by David Drake.

Oh, I see. I thought you were talking about something else. You lost me in your last sentence though...

S'okay, the interpretation & articulation of the critic's reception of the work of art is not always attuned to that of the artist.

At last! a wonderfully accurate modern depiction of the allosaur from that great film.

Gwangi was a Rex, not an Allosaur. Still, good picture.

I know. But since it looks more Allosaurian (and they get less cinematic love) I decided to just tip the balance more toward the Allosaurus side of its design.

Don't worry, Gwangi was an Allosaurus. Many T-Rex fans just won't admit it. They say it so many times that it's an Allosaurus that it's even on the back cover of the DVD. Awesome pic. I too wish for a realistic Gwangi film in the future.

Although many people argue that Gwangi is either a T rex or a Allosaurs, I think its a possibility he could be a hybrid of both, what do you think?

I think it's unlikely, because what you are describing is akin to combining a wolf and a lion. They have the same family and ancestors, but they can't be hybrid-ized.
Cool thought, though, and Harryhausen himself said that he took elements of rexy when designing Gwangi.

Oh God! Not another remake. They already ruined Clash of the Titans, Planet of the Apes, Time Machine and so many more. And coming up is a remake of Westworld. The original movie was great and we should leave these classics alone and respect them for what they are.

You are really talented, if art is what you want to do with your life you might consider being a professional paleoartist. You might be interested in this webpage [link] By the way I also live near Atlanta.
