Desk lamps make very good, dramatic lights with webcams. You should try!

My desk lamp hates me, it lights only one side of my face, no matter where I put it

ah, but that's how a key light works... it lights one side of your face... then you can use a fill light for the other side or not...you are creating drama with this kind of lighting
