I really have a hard time deciding how to choose which characters I like more. I was honestly afraid of Russia when I first saw him, but I guess after learning all he's been through (and especially after seeing Belarus scare him so much), My feelings for him started to change and I started to like him more.
Same kinda goes for France, because I didn't like how he always made fun of poor England, especially when they were kids. But after I found those ant-rapist protest pictures of France, I really felt guilty for hating him, especially since...I was one of the people who thought he was like that.
As for America, it kept switching back and forth quite a bit. So many times I would find an example of him being an a**hole - although it was mostly fanfiction - and then came in the sad memorial pictures and fanfictions, such as for 9/11. Somewhere around that I guess I realized that I just could hate the usually hyperactive nation, even if he isn't my country.
Germany and Sweden are different cases entirely. My feelings towards them have always been sort of mutual.
Anyways, sorry for the long rant. I just couldn't stop from saying so much after seeing so many emotional responses.

About Russia-baby...yeah I don't have much to say. xD I never really hated him, I just thought his personality was perfect when I first heard of him and thought he was just funny. I guess I didn't take Hetalia really seriously at first, so because of that I never had a hatred towards any country. It started out me thinking Russia-baby was hilarious and just PERFECT, and then turned into me seeing that he was much deeper, and on top of that realizing just how adorable he is!
I never thought France was a rapist. I never thought that about ANY character inΒ existenceΒ (unless they actually DID do that...which isΒ obvious >3>). I just find that kind of offensive, and not just to the character. Though I'm glad you now realize he's not. ;w; As for the France teasing England thing, I think it's more of a friendly teasing. xD I wouldn't say "poor England" about that. Haha. England is tsundere, and it's fun to bug tsunderes. 
I think I just had to love America from the start because I AM American. Though the anime really doesn't help with that A-hole thing, you were talking about. Especially the English dub. The English dub messed up a bunch of characters (China's the best example), and America was one of the victims. America is actually, in the webcomics, SUPPOSED to be a very kind person, but also a big air-head, too...and kind of clueless. So he's stupid, yes, but a well-intended stupid. And heck, you can love a country even if they're not your own, silly. ;D
Haha, I just love them both (Germany and Sweden). ;7; They're both so funny and awkward. Lol!
