“Isn’t it just wonderful, Daff? They’re going to figure out everything. They’re going to fix. Everything! We can... we can finally be normal again! No more extra limbs, eyes, mouths that aren’t ever supposed to exist! No more disgusting mutations! No more just... just us. Just... purely... us. Maybe they can even fix my fur? Maybe... hopefully... no, no... they will. They have to.”
Fern’s words over the past few days rattled around in Vermin’s head like a stubborn coin stuck in a piggy bank. The wild look in her eye as she spoke. Pacing and laughing to herself. This wasn’t right. He’d been so excited when this had all started. Meeting new friends. Jotting down notes about the slight differences between each mutation... Trying to talk to every tail he could! It was all just so amazing! A blessing of a curse! Everything about it just so uniquely beautiful! Something he had only ever dreamed of come true! And... yet... Fern just wanted to throw it all away? Why? She went on and on about how they could all be “cured” by the medical scientists’ research... by research that Daddy was surely helping with. Daddy couldn’t be wrong... right? Maybe... maybe Vermin was sick? But...
Vermin didn’t know what to think... it was tearing him apart inside. He loved his family! They loved him! They hadn’t ever lied to him! Or at least... not that he knew of. Yet this didn’t feel right. This couldn’t be a disease, no! They weren’t sick, this wasn’t hurting anyone... Gerald could never be a disease. Gerald was his friend! The first friend he made during his time in this tree and... and if they were going to chop him off to “fix” him like Fern seemed to suggest in some of her rambles... then...
Fear. Fear gripped deep into the brown kit’s chest. He had to hide. He just had to. If it wasn’t safe here for Gerald then it wasn’t safe here for Vermin either! He just needed to disappear for a bit... And thankfully... word had it that there was a certain kit who knew just how to do just that.
