Description
All right! I guess I'll do something brief with colonization of myself. Let's get started, shall we?All right, so the states that are in red are the thirteen original colonies. If you count present day USA, there are 15 states that reside within the thirteen colony boundries! This is because Vermont use to be part of New York and Maine was considered as Massachusetts! These guys were colonized by no other than England himself!
Next, orange were states that were admitted to the union between the years of 1792-1803, however West Virginia was still part of Virginia at this time! Tennessee use to be the Southwest Territory, and Kentucky use to be part of Virginia as well before becoming it's own state.
Now, yellow is seperated in two sections--the southern part use to be the Mississippi Territory, while the northern was the Michigan Territory. Mississippi and Alabama became states in 1817 and 1820 respectively. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan would all break up into several territories before becoming states of their own!
A little fun fact. Where the red and the orange/yellow meet along that border, to the Mississippi river, use to be an Native American perserve! This was after England's boss, King George the III, acquired it from France! So both orange and yellow parts all use to belong to France as well. (damn France has a lot of kids!)
Green is what was colonized by Spain. Florida was force bought acquired in 1813 (didn't become a state until 1845!). As for gaining all the land from Mexico, which declared independence from Spain in 1810, it was from the beginning of the Texas Annexation, in which we practically said "Texas is now a state of the US!" and Mexico got pretttty mad, which lead to the Mexican-American War in 1846. The United States won the war, and thus got the part of Texas they claimed beforehand, but also managed to win some additional land! This was called the Mexican Cession, in which the US finally made their borders extend to the Pacific Ocean!
Another fun fact! Did you know the "true" south of the United States is not in fact the region of the south? If you want to see things such as deserts, cactus, cowboys and tumbleweeds, The four corner states, Neveda, and Texas are the best place to be! The "south" is just a region name for those below the Midwest and Northeast! But the true "south" is classified with the Western territory!
Hm, let's move onto the blue area! This area is simply known as Louisiana Territory, which I acquired from France. This event was known as the Louisiana Purchase where the United States bought the territory for a whopping $15 million! Back then, that's about 3 cents per acre! This area was from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.
Lastly, purple! The purple area was actually called the Oregon Country back when both England and I preoccupied it. However, we...well, argued about it until we came to a conclusion. This is how the 49th Parallel Line came in place, which practically separates Canada and I with a border. While England colonized Canada, I finally had acquired my manifest destiny by having an expansive country!
The last state to complete continental United States was Arizona on February 14th, 1912!
...then we bought Alaska from Russia in early 1959, and we imperialized Hawai'i in late 1959, completing the 50 states.
That's if for colonization! I hope you enjoyed this lesson!
Feel free to suggest future lessons! And if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Interesting and very well laid out. There are some dates which are incorrect such as when Florida was actually acquired. 1813 was when the Patriot War happened between Georgia and Florida, but Florida is not actually captured/conquered until 1818, purchased in 1819 and officially surrendered to the U.S. in 1821. There were some other small things I noticed and I think you should note that not all states had their present borders at first. Such as Alabama being split in half with North Alabama belonging to Georgia and Southern Alabama (Mobile at least) belonging to Florida/Spain until 1813 when it was finally taken by Alabama. Mobile, Alabama was also originally part of Louisiana and for a while served as French Louisiana's capital.
... Which might be asking you to do too much. It's a very well put together map, I just tend to over think small details. XD

Eheh, well, my admin and I just to give a small summary of it. I blame my admin for not putting every single conflict and whatnot in there, but I appreciate the correction. However, I'm not doing every single thing of my history as I'd probably bore a lot of people! My admin even tells me she didn't know that and she's an American! She went off of what she learned in school. Heh, I guess teachers don't even go into depth as much as we'd like them to.

Haha. Grade schools can only cover so much. You don't really start learning true history until you get into college or do your own research. Until then you're barely skimming the surface. XD

Nice map and drawing! Thanks for the information! We went through American history several times in school, but it always confused me.
For the 13 colonies, I recall counting 14 states on the map in my textbooks until the teachers pointed out that we shouldn't have counted ME because is was part of MA. I guess they didn't draw Vermont in the maps.
I did remember that America won a war with Mexico, resulting in gaining the western states in the green area. I can't remember what the war was called or when it happened.
What were the 30 states (15 Union and 15 Confederate) during the Civil War. I remember CA was the 31st state, but I counted only 26 states for the red, orange, and yellow areas. Which of the other 4 green states were the 27th-30th state?
If HI wasn't part of America during WWII, then Japan didn't attack America by attacking Pearl Harbor. Was HI a separate country that time, or did it belong to another country?
Sorry, but my knowledge in history is bad.

Vermont was ratified to the union as the 14th state in 1791, so it seems weird why they wouldn't draw it on the map! New Hampshire separated Maine from the others, but why they made it Massachusetts is beyond me. Maine, however, didn't become its own state until 1820! So it was considered MA for awhile!
For the Civil War, the United States was consisted of 35 states. The union plus California and Oregon were all technically the USA, while everything below Missouri, Kentucky, Delaware and Maryland were the Confederate States of America. However, MO, KY, DE, and MD were considered the "border" states, in which these states still were for the idea of Slavery, but they refused to secede to the CSA. So in ways, they are still part of the USA, as well. As for the four states you're looking for, I believe it would be in this order: Florida, Texas, Iowa and Wisconsin. All ratified to the union in the years of 1845-48.
Hawaii was part of the US as a territory in World War II. In 1892, the United States imperialized the small nation of Hawaii for it. So, it was still considered US territory by foreigners! It just didn't become its own state until 1959! Since Japan attacked a territory belong to the United States, it practically dragged us into the war.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks for the information!
I can't remember too well, but I guess they drew VT and NY together (without the state border in the middle) and colored them the same color. Maybe that's why we counted 14 instead of 15 states.
I remember learning that America gained 6 states from Mexico: TX, NM, CO, AZ, NV, and CA. So the Civil War came after the Mexican-American War. I had forgotten and remembered it the other way around, and it's probably from not remembering the dates.
During one of my world history discussion sessions in college, the teaching assistant said that a few years ago, one student wrote on his 20th century history final, "The U.S. got drawn into WWII when Japan dropped an A-bomb on Pearl Harbor," and the professor almost decided to fail him, especially when they had spent most of the quarter covering the two World Wars.
