Description

With the cold, winter months upon them, the small island of Capricorn Reef was bursting at the seams with migrating tourists trying to find some sort of sanctuary from the frigid ice and snow. Along with them, was Mako’s adopted sister Lady and her family, who had decided to stay on the reef during the kids’ Winter Break before going back and finishing off their senior year of high school. Much to Mako’s and Kiwi’s delight. Along with the sudden influx of ponies, came lots of booming business for the shops and restaurants on the island, including the Mix, The Friendly Bean café, the Around the Bayou and many many more. All the inhabitants had high hopes for another prosperous new year.
    Always happy to spend time with his sister and her kids, Mako was more the eager to use up some of his piled up vacation days. The damn workaholic. Even on days that he was working in the shop, Mako would do his best to entertain his niece and nephew with stories of his past lives as a pirate or strange encounters he had on the high seas. All true he claims, much to Xhisrc’s skepticism.
    Kiwi Breeze on the other hand, was overly eager to have another marefriend to trade embarrassing baby stories with. The hyperactive pegasus would take Lady out on shopping trips to the strip malls and other little shops on the island, in search of all the wedding and baby essentials. Kiwi also urges her reclusive husband, Silver Lining to spend some quality “guy time” with Mako, saying it would be good bonding. A little hesitant at first to the idea, Kiwi accompanied them on their first fishing trip, which unfortunately ended with Mako receiving a new eyebrow “piercing” from swimming on the wrong end of Kiwi’s fishing pole.
    This lead to an unplanned visit to the Capricorn Reef Hospital, much to Bubble’s surprise. She had only just started working there for a couple of days now, still in training and here comes her coltfriend with bandages and blood on his face. Bubble Lee was less than amused by the situation but she did her job and patched up Mako’s eyebrow with a kiss on the forehead and sent him on his way with warnings that he’ll have hell to pay once she gets off her shift. It was already bad enough that she had to take care of her heavily medicated cousin, she didn’t want to have to worry about risk of infection from her coltfriend as well.
     As promised, after Singe was released from the hospital he was moved to Mako and Bubble’s boat house where he could be watched over and taken care off while recovering. Not wanting to add additional stress of possible unexpected explosions from his niece, Mako asked if his sister to refrain from bringing her two oldest children over to his house while Singe was there. Lady agreed… and then proceeded to come over herself to see the poor sickly pigeon herself. Mako returned home from a trip of deep sea diving to find Singe covered in a nest of blankets and surrounded by a buffet of freshly baked cookies and pastries. Mako was less than enthused..
    The next couple of weeks went by busy and hectic, but relatively uneventful, like a calm before the storm. After a long shift at the hospital, Bubble went back to her home to change, finding a note from Mako that he went on another fishing trip with Silver, promising this time he’d stay in the boat to prevent possible future medical bills. Skeptical that Mako could actually last a week without injury, Bubble changed into a casual attire and made her way down the beach towards the fishing pier to meet Mako and her father upon their return. Knowing that her mother would likely want to prepare dinner for everyone, she made a quick stop by the market to pick up some fresh produce.
    The pier was packed and it was hard to see through the sea of tourists getting off the ferry and busy fishmongers trying to sell their wares. Bubble strained her neck to look for the familiar panda faced stallion.
Bubble: Mako? Makoooo!
???: ….. Polo?
Bubble: *turns to look, giggling to herself* Hehehe, no no no, Mako! Not….. *gasps, dropping her bag, fruit spilling and rolling off the pier* …………. S-Sunstreak…
    The tall golden colored pegasus bent down and picked up an apple that rolled over to his hooves. His smile was soft and sincere, but his eyes sent an unnerving chill down Bubble’s spine as she took a hesitant step back, her breath suddenly feeling shallow as her throat constricted, making it almost painful to swallow. When the stallion spoke, his low, warm melodic voice caused every hair on her body to stand on end.
Sunstreak: Hey there Bubbs, long time no see~
Bubble: …… *fur bristling as she stares at him wide eyed, having trouble finding her voice* …...… What are you doing here, Streak?
Sunstreak: *ears perk, his smile widening and taking a step forward* I heard that you moved back to Capricorn Reef, hehe. You, of all ponies, I would have thought would have moved far away from his rock but--
Bubble: *interupts, her glare never lifting* Have you been keeping tabs on me? *ears back defensively*
Sunstreak: *raises his hand* No no! Hahaha, you misunderstand. You remember Wild Ace from high school? He gave me a call a few days back and said he ran into you while at the hospital. I’m happy that you got the job, your family must be so proud…
Bubble: And so you wanted to see for yourself, huh? What are you really doing here, Streak?
Sunstreak: What do you mean? I came here to see you! ……...Why are you getting so defensive?
Bubble: *takes a step back, ears flat against her head* Defensive? Of course I’m being defensive! What, you think that you being gone for a few years would make me forget everything that happened? *as memories started flooding back, her heart racing in her chest*
Sunstreak: *looks confused* You mean what happen with your cousin..?
Bubble: No, I--
Sunstreak: Because, you know I was only defending myself from him. I never provoked him…! *taking a step towards Bubble*
Bubble: *tenses and backs up* ...T-that’s not what Singe said..
Sunstreak: Tch, and you’ll take that deadbeat half-breed’s word over mine? He probably has brain damage from how many times he’s burnt himself!
Bubble: *holds her own arms, tail tucking between her legs* ..Ugh.. I-I can’t do this… I can’t be around you…
    The pegasus’ ear twitched slightly, his eyes weaseling down at Bubble’s tone. It was short and irritable, and it carried through the crowd loud enough that passing ponies were stopping and staring at the commotion. This wasn’t anything like he imagined their first encounter to be like... Perhaps he should change his tactics.
Sunstreak: *ears fold back, taking a deep breath to calm himself* You.. you are perfectly right. It’s fine, I understand..
Bubble: *ear twitches, noticing the change of tone in his voice*.... You.. understand?
Sunstreak: *nods* I realize that in the past I wasn’t a saint and I made mistakes. And these fatal errors and miscalculations ruined my perfect world, and my tainted my name. I lost everything that ever mattered to me. I lost you.
Bubble: ……
Sunstreak: I took things too far before but, Bubble, I’ve grown since high school. I should have realized I was overstepping my boundaries.. And believe me, I never wanted to hurt you. *reaching to gently caress Bubble’s cheek*
Bubble: *flinches and turns her face away* W-well you did! And.. I don’t think I can trust you…
Sunstreak: *pulls his hand back, his ear twitching as he took a minute to think up something to say to turn the tables* … After what happened, after I was taken from you, it tore me up inside. I went down a downward spiral and… I… found help.
Bubble: *ears perk, assuming he meant therapy of some kind* … That’s… good. I’m happy for you..
Sunstreak: *grins, seeing that it’s working and kept rolling with it* Yes, it made me realize the error in my ways. I’ve left my past self behind me and have decided to move forward. I’m now the soul heir of a multi-million bit company. I have made business relations nobles and delegates from countries all over the globe.
Bubble: *scoffs a little* Hmph.. You seem like you finally have your “perfect life” you’ve always wanted… So why are you back here of all places?
Sunstreak: I have it all, but despite all the money and power, I still feel empty inside. I realize that I’ve…. left loose ends when I left Capricorn Reef.
Bubble: ….. You mean me?
Sunstreak: *nods and takes Bubble’s hand in his, smiling* Being with you.. Our time together was perfect and I would give anything to have a bit of that happiness back.
Bubble: *ear twitches, feeling Love flow from Streak’s hand* ….... *pull her hand back* That time is over. What happened in the past should stay in the past.. I… I’m happy that you’ve turned over a new leaf and I hope that find happiness…. But I’ve moved on since then and happily in a relationship.
    For a brief moment, Sunstreak’s eyes widen, his pupils shrinking to the size of pinpoints. A smile stretched across his face.
Sunstreak: You are… married? Is that who “Mako” is?
Bubble: *a little unnerved by Sunstreak’s calm tone* He’s my coltfriend but we are still very serious... And I’m very happy with him.
Sunstreak: Hmhmhm.. Of course, my apologies. I didn’t mean any disrespect towards you and your.. coltfriend. You’ll have to introduce me to him at some point. He must be one hell of a stallion to sweep you off your hooves..
Bubble: *ears fold back* That’s… not going to happen, Streak.
Sustreak: *ears twitch before folding back flat to his head* I see.. That's fine, I didn’t come here for him. I came all this way because I want to make amends and make it up to you for the way I’ve treated you.
Bubble: …..
Sunstreak: I.. I can show you I’ve actually changed. Please, Bubble.. Just give me a chance. That’s all I’m asking for.
    Before Bubble could open her mouth to respond, she heard a familiar voice bark her name from down at the opposite side of the pier, causing her to jump. Streak glanced passed her to see Silver Lining, Bubble’s cantankerous father, glaring bullets at him. Standing next to him was a large, towering black and white sea pony.
Silver: *grunts out again* Bubble. Get o’er here.
Bubble: *ears perk, calling back* Uhh.. Coming, Daddy. *she glanced at Streak before turning to leave*
Streak: ….. *reaches and grabs Bubble’s wrist to stop her* Bubble.
Bubble: *spins and stares at Streak wide eyed and ears flat against her head* !!!
Streak: *hands her the bag that she dropped earlier* Don’t want to forget this, hehehe…. I’ll be in town for the next couple of weeks, staying at the Starboard Inn. If you decide to change your mind… you know where to find me. *before gently releasing her wrist*
    For a brief moment, Bubble stared at him and then at the bag in her hand before giving a quick nod and turning to meet her father and Mako at the end of the pier. Frazzled and a little overwhelmed, Bubble beelined to her coltfriend and gave him a quick hug, burying her head into his chest and taking in a deep breath. Streak watched as as the sea pony returned the hug and nuzzled against her head, before looking up and making eye contact with Streak. A brief second felt like ages had past. A wide unnerving grin stretched across his face before giving Mako a nod, spreading his large wings and taking off into the air and flying back towards the city.
