Description And the last. Really. Well, I don't PLAN on doing more, anyway... I'll see. It's a nice effect, at any rate.

Sasuke: [link]

edit: alright!

The china ink is actually not so hard, you just have to be careful not to get ink everywhere, and learn how to use just the very tip to make fine lines, or push a little more to make thicker lines. (personally I use an inking pen-brush thing that comes with an ink cartidge included, which helps a lot, but it should also work with a standard brush dipped into an ink pot, just be very careful not to drip everywhere because china ink really doesn't wash off well. Or at all. Fair warning, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use the brush for anything else afterwards, unless you rinse it immediately, and a lot.)

Practice on a piece of paper, make loops, little dots, see how the brush reacts and where it goes; it's not as solid as a pen, duh, and therefore won't stay put as well. It doesn't make for very precise details, but it's great at making composition and elegance of the characters' position stand out. Remember! *bullshit truth that I just figured out~* China ink isn't about exact precision, it's about elegance.

The colors are even easier, it's just a transparent layer with photoshop on top of the lineart, then a fuzzy brush with 50% transparence or whatever it's called in english, and go wild! what's fun is that it looks even better when you color outside the lines, and that's probably the only kind of lineart that does. (if you want the faded look, add a second transparent layer, color it with a light gray -- or several zigzags with the fuzzy brush like I did -- and then play with the settings to make it more blue or green or purple or whatever.)

(of course, if you don't have china ink, a brush, or photoshop, you're kinda screwed. oops. )

Frankly, it's so easy that I don't think i'll use the technique again, unless I find a neat sexy fighting pose that just screams "i need china ink on me, baby". And even so, I'm just. that. lazy.

China ink? I've seen it in art catalogs before. How does it compare to, say, India ink?

I could have sworn the colors were red India ink and watercolor <3

Dunno, never tried India ink. I think. O.o Mostly I just buy whatever looks black in its little pot. *loses as an arteest*

mistywolf In reply to askerian [2006-11-25 10:05:30 +0000 UTC]

I don't even know how to use India Ink much.

And I'm totally and utterly CG-illiterate.

How's that for phailin'?

Easily my favourite out of the three. ^^ I love the way the sword turned out, looks kinda hard to achieve though But maybe that's just me, seems I just can't get the pressure right...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

askerian In reply to ellarin [2006-11-12 17:26:45 +0000 UTC]

Hee. ^^ Yeah, it required some practice beforehand. D: And I can't do it if i'm even a little more excited or tense than usual, because then my hands shake just a tiny tiny bit and that's enough to mess it up. =__=;;; Practice to get a steady hand even without leaning on anything definitely helps.

This is a really cool series. I can't believe you did it using an actual ink and brush. I can hardly spell my name with them....in English no less. Really, really fantastic job! Love all three pictures to bits. The poses are the coolest thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

askerian In reply to funky-squirrel [2006-11-08 08:44:19 +0000 UTC]

o.o I'd think writing your name would be a lot more difficult than drawing ! it has all these little curls and complete changes of direction. Drawing with them just requires some flowing curves here and there, and the picture is probably bigger than the words.

Thank you ^___^

Absolutely lovely. I looked at all of them, just now, and I have to say the Sasuke one is my favorite, because I love the pose, but I like the colors on this one. At first I wasn't quite sure that was a sword she was holding, but I can see that now. Very cool.
