It's just honesty, not rudeness. It's worse to lie than to just say this. Besides, if he'd said "yeah sure", he'd just be getting her hopes up because neither is really a possibility. You make a good point Ed. I think Hawkeye would probably shoot the Colonel before he took on another apprentice in Flame Alchemy considering what the two of them went through to get rid of it.
