I usually manage to solve the puzzles easily, and most of the rest of the time I get there eventually. But when everything you think of vanishes, and you know there's at most twenty or so things it could be left, the temptation is there to machinegun it.

(as opposed to shotgunning: giving lots of vuage answers at once in the hope of hitting something)
