Nicky Gunnery always thought she was destined for the sea. Born into a naval family in London, there was just no expectation of any other path in life. Her father was a captain for the Overseas Patrol Squadron with his own command, her mother a captain in the 1700 Naval Air Squadron, and her two older brothers had graduated from Dartmouth and were beginning their naval career rotations. She, too, joined and was accepted into Dartmouth right out of secondary school, fully expecting to adhere to the life of a naval officer that was expected of her. She was perfectly content with that decision. There was honor to be gleaned in service, familial expectations to be met from a mother with outrageously high expectations, and brothers she needed to shut up - and she was more than willing to take on every last one of these challenges.

Until a navy boxing event held on the HMS Elisabeth changed her priorities.

It was an inter-service event held between the Royal Navy, Armed Forces, and Air Force, and what she saw thrilled her like nothing else ever had. She knew of boxing, of course, but she never been to one an event live, and she cursed herself for not discovering this sport sooner. Much, much sooner. The lights! The fanfare! The fights! Especially the fights! Men and women engaged in primal combat - absent of the distractions and complications of life. Just two people in the ring beating the bloody crap out of each other to see who was better, to see whose hand was raised. It was simple and, more importantly, it was sincere. A clear objective that she knew she wanted to be apart of it, in a way that the navy and its byzantine rules never quite quite seemed to capture for her.

She signed up for the Dartmouth boxing team the very next day.

Over the next year, no one was in the gymnasium more than Nicky Gunnery. No one was in the ring sparring more than Nicky Gunnery. Boxing had ignited a spark in her that she didn't know, and the grueling training that she knew she had to undertake to be the best of the best until strengthened her resolve. She was always a athletic young woman, but boxing showed her things she didn't think her body could ever do. She won her first match at the Royal Navy individual championships and was subsequently allowed to join the team for the next inter-service bout for the HSM Elisabeth, where she won the tiebreaker match against the Armed forces to bring home the gold for the Jacks.

A few weeks later, she dropped out of Dartmouth and joined a boxing gym proper.

She hasn't spoken to her parents since that last shouting match, though her oldest brother keeps her updated. And in her heart of hearts? She doesn't care. Boxing was her life and she would stay stagnant, stay mediocre if she competed solely at the extra curriculum level. She wanted more. She needed more.

Four years later and at the age of 20, Nicky's a rising lightweight star in the Athena Global Boxing Promotion (AGBP) with a current record of 10-2-1, and she hungrier than ever; hungry for her next knockout, hungry for her first true championship belt, hungry to prove her naysayers wrong again, hungry for the vain hope that her family will finally understand and, above all else, hungry to stand at the top of the world within the weight classes she fights in.

Also hungry for pasta, but that's easily remedied.
