Amrani had never done any woodwork in her life, but if you asked her how it felt to knock out another woman, she would say the only real comparison was like chopping down a tree. Well, if chopping down a tree was the best feeling you would ever feel in the world. You size the trunk up, plow into it with all the tools and skills and experience you’ve honed over the years, and then nothing happens to it at first, and you wonder whether is it enough, whether you did it right, whether all those hard days honing the craft would give reality to that vision of victory you have in your head-

And then… TIMBER.

The culmination of relief as the impact of the trunk hits the ground, followed by a feeling so soaring, so transcendent, luxuriating in its waters was better than intercourse. Well, most intercourse.

Amrani may not have spent any time as a lumberjack, but she did have more experience knocking out other woman than most other boxers in the world, and there was nothing else in the world like the minutes after you had taken all the pride and strength from someone else who thought themselves your better, who walked in thinking they had a shot at you. While she didn’t start boxing because she wanted to explicitly hurt another human being, she wouldn’t deny she was now in it to chase this high as much as she chased the titles of the so-called champions ranked above her.

And it was all the sweeter when it was a mouthy little runt like Nicky Gunnery who didn’t know her place in the world. She was grinning from ear to ear like a schoolgirl, bouncing excitedly in her corner as she waited against the turnbuckle, waiting for those numbingly long 10 seconds to pass before sweet victory was hers.

Less sweet when the mouthy little runt got back up.

When Nicky pushed up to her feet at the count of 4, Amrani’s grin only widened, a conflict of both disbelief and anticipation etched on her face. On one hand, few girls could take a direct hit from her and beat the count with seconds to spare. On the other hand, she wanted that high again, wanted to beat down Gunnery until there was nothing left, until the Brit carried the wound of this defeat for the rest of her life, and a prolonged match as she tore down every part of her boxer’s self-esteem would extinguish any excuse she would try to tell herself.

God, she really hated her. She got into a vicious mindset when she fought, but no one had got into her head this much, and she was going to show Nicky Gunnery why that was the worst thing she could have done.

She patted her head coach, Amandine Leroux, on the chest with her glove as if to say “Watch this.” as she strutted out to put the fear of god into Nicky.

“Stick to the strategy, Celie.”

She would not, in fact, be sticking to the strategy. He was a good coach, a second father to her, and he gave structure to the unhoned stone that she was, but it was her fighting in the ring, not him. Her instinct trumped strategy here. As both boxers squared up, Nicky looked uncertain for the first time; groggy. No point playing safe and it was most certainly not a feint. Amrani smelled blood and she was ending this now.

Power was what Amrani was known for, yes, but that power came with explosive speed and offensive footwork that gave her the knockouts she was known for. Until now, that speed and footwork had been either held back or repurposed for passive defending. But now? As the referee gestured for war, Amrani blazed forward and all but blew Nicky back. That instinctive Gunnery pressure was still there to fend her off, but it was weakened, unfocused, allowing Amrani to just plow right on through and stole ground after ground after ground as she forced the Brit back and back and back

And when Nicky’s back finally hit the ropes, Amrani started wailing away with every intention to make this round the last. Nicky, now fully in a defensive position she had rarely experienced in a career, closed her guard and tried her best to keep small, but Amrani was having none of it. She piled on the damage as she munched away that guard, revenge for all the forced passivity Nicky had kept her in during the opening round, and then-

Then her guard faltered for a microsecond and that was enough for Amrani to punch right through and drive a vicious glove right into her chin. Nicky’s head snapped back and, for the moment, the impact seemed to threaten to carry her out of the ring and to the floor below, but no. The crowd went wild, thirsting for that second round knockout that was coming as Nicky’s knees buckled and-
