I´m not sure at all later I will looking for more information but terror birds during the Great interchange beetwenNorth and South american fauna the extended their territory to the north(Florida,Kansas)and survive at 1´7-1´8 milion year ago(but maybe they survive more time in little populations it´s a possibility that I can´t descart at all).Pleistocene start s with the first glaciation 2milion year ago if I remember well,it enter in the period.

that's what i was thinking and i for one think if not competition with mammalian predators as recently said then perhaps humans might have something to do with their extinction, but if no humans that what else could have contributed to these fast, strong, intelligent dinosaurian handed mega beasts

Emm,that...this birds YES have competition in predatory terms but they are scavengers too.Smilodon Populator were strong , fast and hunt in packs too and hunts the same big animals in Southamerica but they can´t profite the animal carcass eficiently and before the aparition of Dire wolfs (800000years ago if i remember well)aren´t any big scavenger except Phorusracidae .In other continents the mamalian competition extinted other unflyness carnivore birds long time ago but was progresive retrocess. In North not only smilodon species also arctodus simus(short-face bear)and american lions(panthera atrox)are temible competence.

It´s a very remote posibility we dont have fossil evidence of that but fossils not ever avaliable it´s extremely dificult that and specimen fossilice if the specie is very rarely (in the line of extinction),maybe in some place of Southamerica(I don´t believe they survived much time along the begining of glaciations in North and are too much predatory competence in that zone and paleoindians come to America only at the end of Pleistocene 13000-14000years ago). But if they had an encounter with paleoindians ,humans could exterminate these(remember that other Megafauna top predators were eliminated by sapiens before, like Megalania in Australia)
