They do have donkeys in the show, it's just that the show staff tend to mistake donkeys for mules which look totally different in real life.

Pretty late on commenting but I like this donkey! She makes me happy. Still do not understand why Donkeys/Mules don't have cutie marks in the show, but it is all good.

Pero ese es un prejuicio humano y los protagonistas de la serie son equinos,ya podrían haber incluido algun asno para variar

Los animales de dibujos animados pueden tener mascotas siempre que estas no se comporten como humanos(no hablen,tengan empleo, etc).Por eso tambien Mickey Mouse tiene a Pluto o Bob Esponja a Gary.Angel,el conejito de Fluttershy entra en esta categoría

If I could point out, the closest thing to a donkey was the mule who made a very brief cameo during that episode when Applejack was working herself too hard trying to harvest all the apples while trying to do favors for her friends at the same time. The mule was used as a joke when Twilight Sparkle said, "That pony is as stubborn as a mule".
