Chapter 2 - Hurry!
It felt good to be back in the Divide again. Gesh's flight muscles were still sore but he didn't care. Compared to in the human world he felt practically weightless, allowing him to glide through the air with ease. As he flew he took his soul stone out of the pouch and examined it. He had never seen it glow the way it did in Devyn's possession. What did it mean? In fact he was now wondering alot of things. Things he cared nothing about until now. Things like humans and their world and why the council had such strict rules about it.
As he was looking at it it started to change. In the center grew a small crimson glow. Then he felt an odd sensation. It was as if there was some invisible force trying to lightly pull him the other way.
'Bragg must have tried some mucked up spell to alter it. Or maybe the girl did use magic after all.'
Either way this couldn't be good. If his soul stone was tampered with and changed he would be disqualified from the trial. They wouldn't give the crown to anyone with a soul that didn't match it's twin, which was kept in the council's possesion. Gesh decided he needed to take a time out from hunting his brothers and resolve the issue with his soul stone. But how?
He had to be very careful about how he handled this conundrum. He couldn't go to his father and admit he'd broken the rules and been to the human world. King Murdoc was not one to tolerate disobedience from his children, and would likely punish Gesh severely. Any teachers capable of sharing what they knew about soul stones couldn't be trusted not to tell his father or the council. He could think of only one other. Octavia. A dema who was the overseer of the library, and a councilman's daughter.
Despite her connection to the council he felt he could trust her with his problem. Mainly because she wanted to be his mate and made no secret of it. She was attracted to Gesh but that paled in comparison to the attraction of being queen of the most powerful family in the divide, second only to the council itself. Gesh cloaked himself as an extra measure of caution as he sped to the library.
As he flew he kept glancing at his stone and it's unusual behavior, feeling an uneasiness from the invisible tugging that was always present. He had a strange sense of something important needing his attention, but didn't know what to make of it.
It was late so there was only a few demons still hanging around the library. Gesh quickly found Octavia sitting behind a large desk looking bored as she chewed the tip of her writing utensil, her long flowing blonde hair draped around her shoulders. After checking to see if it was safe he dissolved his cloak and tapped her arm. As soon as she saw who was bothering her she jumped up and flared her wings in excitement.
"Gesh, my love!"
Her dark blue eyes, surrounded by brownish orange skin, were lit up with joy. She hurled herself at him, flinging her arms around his neck and hugging him tightly. At the sudden embrace Gesh had a vision flash in his mind. It was Devyn. She appeared to be reaching out for him as she wept and cried out.
"I need you Gesh. Please save me!" Then it was gone.
'What in Eternity....? That girl.... I never even told her my name.'
He looked down at Octavia who still clung to him, her tail snaking it's way up his backside. Normally he was entertained by her bold infatuation with him, but now was not the time. Gripping her shoulders he forcefully tore her off.
"Octavia, I am here for information, not pleasure. It is urgent. Can you point me to your books on soul stones?"
She gave him a dissapointed frown and pouted.
"I have not gotten to see you since before the trial started and this is how you say hello?!"
Her frown quickly turned into a sensuous and flirty grin as she leaned in to try for a kiss. She was "letting" her green clothing slightly fall open around her breasts, making sure they were in his line of sight. Impatient, but not wanting to get on her bad side at the moment, he played along. Cradling her head in his hands he kissed her with as much passion as he could muster, which wasn't much. It was Octavia who pulled away first.
"Oh fine. I can tell your mind is not on me right now. I will take you to the books you are looking for. This way then."
The library was enormous. Gesh thought it could easily house a small castle. She trudged along, leading him to several aisles containing all manner of texts, all involving varying amounts of information about soul stones. She held out her hand in the direction of the books.
"Here you go. I am closing up soon, but I will let you stay as long as you desire, my prince."
That sounded just fine to Gesh seeing as how there were so many books to look through.
"I thank you Octavia. Now if you do not mind, I need to get to work."
"You know where I will be if you need any assistance or...'company'," she said with a wink as she walked past him, dragging her claws across his chest. As soon as she was gone he delved into book one. Book after book he read, finding nothing but information and facts he either already knew or that didn't help him. After a few hours of searching he stopped for a short break. Rubbing his tired eyes he thought back to his time in the human realm. He remembered the sights, smells and of course the girl.
'What in Eternity is wrong with my soul?!' he thought, with frustration.
He took his soul stone out to look at it. Still the same blue with red in the center. Just then he began to feel odd. He felt hot and drained of energy. Thinking he just needed to rest, he sat down and leaned against a bookshelf. Laying his head back he closed his eyes and was hit with another quick vision. This time he saw the encounter he had just had with Octavia. He was looking down at her as she clung to his neck, but when he pushed her away, it was no longer her. Instead it was the human girl, pleading with her teary green eyes.
"I need you! Please Gesh, hurry!"
His eyes shot open.
'What is happening?!'
He felt disturbed. His unneasiness growing as he desperately tried to think of how he could explain this all away. On the verge of panic, his attention was stolen by a sudden white light somewhere above him. Looking up he saw a book high up on a shelf that was glowing brightly but dimmed and faded shortly after.
'This just keeps getting weirder and weirder!'
The demon forced himself to his feet, feeling weak and a bit wobbly. After steadying himself, he looked up, aimed for the book and gave several strong flaps of his wings. He snatched it from the shelf, fell back down, and collapsed to all fours. The tome was dry and appeared ancient with a blank cover. He flung it open, his eyes darting all over the pages. They contained all sorts of spells, incantations, facts, tales and strange magic that he'd never heard of.
'What is all of this? I have never heard of any of it.'
His spirits suddenly lifted as he stopped on a picture of a soul stone with a red center like his. Feeling weak and fatigued he read on.
Making the pact: When one wishes to share with another a bond of ultimate trust and respect, they must offer their soul stone as a token of that bond. If the reciever of the soul accepts the token in the true of their heart and mind, they will be enveloped in the bonding magic as proof of their acceptance, thus initiating the process.
Next, a transfer of each other's blood is required for the spell to work.
Finally, both parties involved in the bonding must come in physical contact with each other while simultaneously mixing their blood and in contact with the soul stone. At that time, the one who offered their soul stone will also be enveloped in the bonding magic, completing the process.
Rules of Bonding: When a bond has been formed, both parties will be magically connected to one another. The experience may vary depending on the beings involved. It is vital to know that those who are bonded may now share pain, injuries and even death.
Gesh's eyebrows shot up. He kept reading.
The reciever of the soul stone must keep it close to them or be faced with fatal consequences. The exact distance differs depending on the beings involved. Should they be seperated too greatly, the reciever will fall ill, followed by an unconscious dream-like state where their life force will slowly fade, resulting in death. Once one half dies, the other will soon follow.
"Eternity take me, this is bad!" he yelped out loud.
Without reading any more he clumsily got to his feet and ran as fast as he could, leaving a big mess of books all over the floor. On his way out he ran into Octavia.
"Gesh, how is your-"
He shoved by her without a word, leaving her standing there with her mouth hanging open.
'What in Eternity did he do that for?!'
When he was out of sight she went to the aisle he was in to find the mess he'd left.
"Guuugh," she growled in irritation. "Thank you for leaving me a huge mess to clean up!"
She jerked several books off the floor and put them in their proper spots. She had most of the mess cleaned up when she noticed the old book he had left open. Putting all the others away first, she picked it up and examined what was on the pages, curious about what he was doing the whole time. She was unfamiliar with the books contents so she found a spot to relax as she studied it.
Meanwhile, Gesh was heading back towards the place where he left Devyn's house. His mind rattled with worried thoughts. Could what the book said really be what was happening to him? He had no other explanation so he had to believe it for now.
'I hope I'm not too late!'
He flew slower than usual, getting weaker by the minute. But eventually he made it. The place was plain and barren with little to no recognizable landmarks around. All he knew was that he was in the general area.
"This will have to do," he said, and uttered the spell to first make himself invisible.
The simple spell drained him badly. He tried to fight it but he was too weak to keep standing. He collapsed to the ground and forced out the spell to send him into the human's realm. As he laid crumpled on his side, the warm, dark and dusty surroundings faded to cool, noisy and light filled. He struggled to keep his eyes open as he looked around.
He was lying next to a busy street. Cars sped by, their headlights blinding him. It was night but there was light everywhere, coming from cars, traffic lights, street lights, signs and buildings. Gesh didn't recognize where he was and was unable to move.
'Is my life truly going to end in such a degrading fashion?'
After laying there immobilized for a few minutes, a little bit of his strength began to return to him. He slowly shifted his head to get another look around and saw, opposite the busy street, a bunch of buildings that looked almost exactly like Devyn's house. Focusing, he felt the tugging trying to coax him in that direction. His whole body felt like lead as he tried to get up. Slowly, enough energy seeped back into him, allowing him to prop himself up, his claws scraping against the concrete as he pushed against the ground.
"Come on. This is NOT how I will meet my end!" he urged himself.
"You're so close. Let me try to help you."
Gesh quickly looked up and saw the girl standing before him and holding out her arm. She had a ghostly appearance, he could see right through her. He hesitataed for a moment, staring and wondering how she was doing it.
"What is going on?!" he growled at her.
She said nothing. Only leaned a little closer to him.
Gesh decided he would not try to understand for right now and reached for her hand. He wasn't at all surprised when his hand passed right through hers. Giving the demon a dissapointed look she faded away. With determination he made it to his feet and followed his sense into the neighborhood. The closer he got the more his strength returned. Finally finding her house he looked in the window. It was dark inside. He carefully went in and found the girl unconscious on the floor.
Remembering what the book said his heart felt as if it was going to bust right out of his chest. Holding out his hand he summoned a small orb of pale blue light that lit up just enough for him to examine her. Creeping close he squatted down next to her and rolled her onto her back. He let out his breath in a big sigh of relief upon seeing that she was breathing. He never could have imagined feeling so grateful for the life of a human.
The relief he felt washed over him, releasing all the tension and stress. Letting himself fall back on his rear end he just watched the girl for a bit, worried she would stop breathing at any moment. He didn't know what to do. He took out his soul stone. Still the same red and blue. He knew next to nothing about this "bonding" thing, but what he DID know was that now it wasn't just his brothers that were a threat to his life, but this human girl as well. And he couldn't deal with her the way he planned to deal with his brothers.
Gesh began to feel angry. His day had started so promising, but now? He couldn't imagine much worse. He cursed Bragg as he glared at Devyn, the tip of his tail twitching in irritation. After fuming for awhile he calmed down and realised he needed a new plan.
"Well," he sighed to himself. "I guess I should make sure you are going to be okay before I try to find out how to undo this ridiculous magic."
He didn't know what to do for her except watch over her and hope she recovered. He thought at the very least maybe making her more comfortable might help. So he scooped her up in his arms. She was light and dainty. Almost like a child to him. He gently laid her down on the soft couch and draped a near by blanket over her. Then he took out his soul stone and looked at it.
'This needs to be close to her at all times.'
That made him very nervous, but he had no choice. Ripping some spare fabric from his clothing, he fashioned his soul into a necklace and put it around her neck. A few seconds later she let out a faint groan and rolled her head slightly. Gesh waited and watched to see if she was waking up, but she continued to remain still and silent.
Taking this opportunity to get some sleep, he stretched out on the floor by the couch. This had been an exhausting day. He kept his eyes on the girl, watching the rythmic motion of her chest rising and falling, until his eyelids grew too heavy. And he was out.

And the plot thickens ... the flowering of a companionship riding the tide of impending danger blooms in hearts unbeknownst. King Tradition of old and Lord Abandonment of new touch upon the lives of two spirits balancing on the air of two realities.
Listening to poetic songs make me impulse write, please excuse the word splatter. Great second part, I kinda like Octavia, she knows what she wants and how to get it. Making moves towards dreams no matter how in vain or fantastic is something to admire. Only downside is she's wasting that motivation on something that could never give her peace.

Wow. I wish my vocabulary was that good! =3 I love your word splatter haha.
I hate Octavia so much XD I designed her to be that way. She represents something I can't freakin stand. And later, she's a beeotch to Devyn. You'll see...
I'm so glad you enjoy my story though! ^_^ I can't wait to see your opinions of the upcoming chapters!

I really enjoyed this..... the characters have a delightful charm. Have you researched on the arts of magic? Looks to me that you have. I will take it that you are enjoying writing this and are probably equally thrilled that others delight too. Carry on.....

Thank you! That makes my day hearing that! I do love when someone else enjoys what I do. It's a great feeling =]
And actually no 0.0 The magic in my story is severely lacking in my opinion. My demon's world is supposed to be full of it, but for some reason I draw a blank when I try to come up with magic abilities and talents for my characters and their world. *sigh*
I should at some point research it. I have to. Or the story will be much lesser for it.

What do you think of it so far? 8)
And yes. I wanted my own words for female demons. That's what I came up with because in my demons'culture, all the female names end with an A.

I think it is fine. XD Nothing to complain. You take the time and work on it like professional. If i was doing story like this i would quickly jump to make them interact
with love and stuff.
I liked the word dema from the first second i saw the word.

Oh yes, that's one thing about me is I don't like when they jump right in and magically fall in love. I prefer my characters do it realistically and get to know each other first =]

How was it though?! I kinda hate the book's description >.< It sounds so bad, it's embarrassing.
And I hate Octavia so much.... you'll find out why later >.> She's a turbo mega beeotch....

XD lol we all seem to put our characters through hell even though we love them.
The book description was okay for your first try, maybe look up spell books, spell descriptions~ Plus, I would add that there were drawings in the book. (like when I added the hourglass image when Rook accidently turned Sophie into a child from the spell book.) It feels more mystical to me when a spell book comes with pictures lol.
I can tell Octavia is gonna be on my nerves lol. Btw when you said Dema, did you mean demoness?

hehe ^^' here's what I found if you look up Dema though it is an actual word and it means in the urban dictionary:
Dema is amazingly cute, sexy, hot female that is erotic to anyone. She is very intelligent, sexy, seductive. She has a 99% chance to become a sociopath.
other website: one having (such) a body
New Latin, from Greek demas body, bodily build
haha, coincidence much?
