Description
New addition for my First Contact War universe. This time I wanted to cover a bit more light hearted scene. Back in the ol' days of Celestia.
I want to cover not just a war, but the entire reason to it and the lives of all around those times. This involves every day life as well, those special fun occasions, or other activities.
Celestia collecting gather some plants with a herbalist.
I imagine she likes plants, because they probably respond well to her Sun.
Always interesting to make the princesses without their usual accessories.
Not the most refined piece, rough brushstrokes, but heh I guess by now that's so common for me
Tried to make it in a similar style as last Saturday's Bulls of the Hooved
Hope y'all enjoy a bit of Sunbutt... being raised in the air.
Approx Time: 5-6 hours

Vision: The theme for Celestia being out hunting for plants is represented nicely. I find the scenery interesting and interesting for the back story to the image. It gives for me a view of the era before Celestia and Luna gained their Cutie Marks unless this would be falling after Luna's banishment then still is a wonderful view into the land with Celestia as a single ruler over Equestira.
Originality: There are a lot of pony works out there and each is original in their own way and this is no exception. Though many works have been done depicting the famous Princess of the Sun herself each holds its own flowing feel. This is original in the way it depicts the Princess without her royal wears and without the royal guard nearby or any Wonderbolts near as well for protection. I find myself wondering if the second pony is an assistant, the Royal Herbalist, or a resident of the land Celestia is visiting and a trade is taking place such as goods or supplies from her Kingdom to theirs in exchange for herbs only found on their soil she wishes to attempt to have grown in the Royal Garden for aid in medicine or cooking. Lovely done.
Technique: Amazing work for the detail, shading, and lighting. The flow with the movement of Celestia's mane and tail feels natural as does the detail and direction with the feathers of her wings. The shading on both is dramatic in some parts and, in my opinion, emphasizes the feel of it being a forest that isn't normally trended into often or at the least not alone due to dangers hiding in the shadows as I am sure there are other dangerous forests besides only the Everfree Forest we all know so very well.
The grass and plant life looks amazing with its subtle colors and shades of green with blue, red, brown, and detail on the stones and the stone works shading. I also enjoy the bare patches gives it a more realist feeling. The mushrooms are a nice touch as are the plants in the background though the ones far back with what look like a gentle outline of a mountain or a sizable bolder or broken tree, nice touch, could had perhaps had a dark green to show it wasn't floating eyes? I thought at first the two dots in back were eyes of a foe then began to see and think perhaps it is to be flowers or some other plant that stands tall after seeing the same sort of two dots to the right and seen a line to show a stem. So perhaps a darker green could had been used just slightly enough to give the sight of it being a plant, if it is, and make it easier to tell it isn't a pair of predator eyes.
Their expressions are wonderfully done as well. The expression in Celestia's eyes of intense focus bring me to think she is very interested in gathering these herbs for her subjects as well for herself to study and learn more knowledge about the lands within her district and outside her district so Equestira can become more united as a world. The smile is nice showing she is pleased and enjoying herself, a nice expression compared to her royal smile that isn't much of a relaxed true smile, or to me in the show seems more for the fact she is a figure head of royalty and in such cannot often just relax.
The expression on the other pony is also nicely done. Her eyes show pleasure at seeing the Princess happy and impressed yet I also get the feeling of worry from her as if she is wishing to continue on their way before any trouble shows up or because she is wanting them both to get back before it becomes dark. The detail on the mare's shirt, I will say shirt, is nice, almost like a traveling vest perhaps? And the I shirt/sash/wrap around Celestia's waist is a nice touch to show a way to help prevent any rough sores that might happen from the woven baskets she's using for carrying her herbs she most likely will be taking back home with her.
The mane and tail on the mare is also beautifully done with lines and flowing with movement. The shading on her is also nice though I wonder if her back, as I look at the screen is my right, back leg should have a little light bit of shading more around the hoof? I'm not very good on angles and shading myself so I'm just saying as an assumption from how my mind is viewing it that perhaps there would be a light bit more around the hoof of shading since it looks like the back right hoof is more in behind the front right hoof. If this isn't so then just ignore that part of this if I have seen the angle wrong in visualizing lighting in my minds eye.
Impact: This radiates a sweet back story of adventure as well as diplomatic. As if the mare showing Celestia the forest with the herbs is one of the local herbalist or Royal Herbalist there in that kingdom or she accompanied Celestia on her trip and is Celestia's privately appointed herbalist there to aid in picking the best for medical use. Though it feels more like the herbalist would be a local so to know the layout of the land and where the best herbs were that could be used for trade with Princess Celestia for goods from her Kingdom. A very lighthearted story feels like it would accompany this, explaining the Kingdom being visited to for the first or second time, discussion on trade goods and the ruler granting for their best herbs to be shown to Celestia for the freshest to be picked and taken back with her for planting and use to aid her subjects.
Over all the artwork is amazingly done. The strokes are smooth and gentle with excellent shading. The expressions convey the emotions on both ponies faces beautifully with Celestia's showing her excitement and intense interest in these herbs now found in her lands Kingdom in Equestria; and the mare's expression of pleasure at seeing the Princess happy along side with a feeling of worry of what might happen if they linger too long in the forest gathering these herbs.
With all the positive I feel from it the two spots in back that, if are flowers, perhaps if it could had been done perhaps had included a dark shade of green going down to represent the stem to show they are flowers unless they are eyes of a predator then nicely done on giving an added feel of lingering danger to aid to the worry reflecting with pleasure in the mare's eyes. Also could had been a little bit of light shading added with the back right leg as to my eyes it appears the leg would be behind the front right one enough to add to a bit of shading around the hoof more but that is just my opinion. I am in no means an expert with shading and have a bad ability with shading/proper angles for shading.
I love how this is done and find it very interesting and it brings multiple thoughts of story possibilities for its background and the terms on which Celestia is there along with if this is before or after Luna's banishment. If before then shows Celestia trusting Luna home alone at their Everfree Forest castle and if after then shows how the land in another part of Equestria during her reign alone though since she isn't wearing her royal wear I would have to say it puts thought of before she banished Luna to the moon. And that is leading to the thoughts of what she might have planned for some of the herbs or flowers she is taking back home such as the red ones in her saddle basket if she might try to pull a prank on her sister upon return or the other way around happen and Luna pull a prank on Celestia with the newly brought herbs to the castle.

I am by no means an expert, but here is my layman's opinion. Visually completely appealing. I love the contrast and to echo another critique, it isn't so much as to make Celestia not belong, my only negative comment would be that it does seem a little dark behind that I cannot see the rest of the detail, but that may be my screen, 4 stars on technique . Technically astounding otherwise, I don't know how all of this works, but I love the feel of brush strokes like in an actual painting. The emotion conveyed by the scene is that of joy in the moment despite what may be surrounding them, a little reminiscent of my favorite piece of yours "Little Snow Apples", 5 stars for impact. And as for originality, never seen anything like it. 5 stars.

What a wonderful, relaxing and beautiful piece! I don't know where to begin! The elegant use of colours to support Princess Celestia's bright colour scheme really helps her stand out, but not so that she doesn't belong. The wonder natural colours gives a life like feeling to the image and really makes on feel like they are part of this outstading piece. Though Celestia has bright colours, you have some how managed to keep it under control so that they dont stand out, and it's done in a way that she looks graceful and elegant, along with looking young and beyounf the word of beautiful. I don't know how you did it, but the emotion coming from the young mare beside her, really shows the care and love that mare feels for the Princess. I Know that how i put this image across is bare and rough, but i don't think it is actually possible to descibe the beauty and grace you have put into this one image alone. They say pictures hold a thousand words, where as this one is much more. Please don't give up on a talent like this, and i look forward to your future work.

It seems they're not aware that at least two ominous-looking creatures are lurking in the background and spying at them ...

Celestia is so young and playful. I guess the castle stress cries for some relaxation, when ever there is time

It's beautiful picture. The only thig that seems off is that she looks like she doesn't have a neck.

She does have a neck, it is just partially hidden by part of her mane, and the angle of her body.

Then she would have shorter neck than the mare next to her.

Wonderful! Your FCW universe is just so rich in every aspect. Ah yes, Celestia from the olden days where she wasn't so detached (and probably jaded) and everything still meant something to her.

I just don't understand why you don't have at least 10,000 watchers. I mean, you may not draw in the styles that are usually popular in the fandom, or with fanart in general, but my God you're so good that shouldn't even matter. And your use of tenebrism is just out of this world.Β

- Not popular alternate universe(His most popular images are mostly series-related art)
- Grimdarkish content
- Overloaded style of drawing(digital painting) that makes ponies... not pretty. That style works good for landscapes/bg/surroundings but not for ponies. Also style's a bit dark too(i'm fine with that).

It's an alternative historic MLP universe I've been creating involving the first contact between Equines and Gryphons.
I'm building it through making art, introducing different scenes, characters, etc.
You can find all my work for it so far in my folder here: assasinmonkey.deviantart.com/gβ¦
