Thanks for writing this out. It's a great read and it makes me happy to see how the piece translates to others. My intention was definitely in line with what you got out of it. To have that deeper, heavier weight to it, to the story the piece itself can tell. It's why I tried to keep the description as empty as possible.
Just like with Twilight's piece 'Drop' a bit of a tie from the show's storyline, developments, situations and personalities, to indicate what could very well be underneath the surface at all times. Something that while can be hidden, as may be done in the show, but can still be evident from through those hiding layers.
Basically this piece being able to tell its story with the knowledge from the show. Which you've indicated to work! That does give me a sense of fulfilment or accomplishment, that I managed to connect them how I intended it to be. Without feedback from others it can be hard to tell whether the stories line up between my piece and episodes, so that's nice to see.
As for the others being made. While my artistic style has slightly focused on other visual styles, the concept behind these two pieces do definitely keep them in my mind. I do want to eventually see if I can make one of the other mane 6 characters, with a similar (heavy hearted) attachment to who they are in the show. New episodes do help with adding and revealing possibilities.
So hopefully I will eventually get to them, they'll at least stay on my list, and maybe one day I'll suddenly get the perfect moment where I just have to make another one.

Well should you ever make another one like Hold and Drop, I'll be happy to see it come to fruition. Also you're welcome with the connection to the story. It pleases me as well to hear someone liking my critiques even this is I believe to be my 7th or 8th critique. I just started in the critiquing side considering that I find it fun to give my opinions on the picture I see at hand. I only do it if no other person critiqued the picture I'm looking at, weird huh? Anyway, glad to see you liked it. Oh and I'll be waiting for the day should you get the inspiration to continue this amazing series. It's worth all the waiting for me

Usually, I really like how you played with lights and shadows in the drawing, gives a very well managed volume. I'm more specialized in digital color, do not know if you did you use the same technique or was in oil and watercolor, but hey, is impressive.
Keep it that you're really doing well

When I saw this illustration, I thought of all of AJ's responsibilities. The title contributed to this thought. Perhaps she feels held down by all of it. She's the one in charge of Sweet Apple Acres (That alone is a very big weight to carry) as well as her family (which I see represented as the apples around her, Granny Smith being the green one, eaten to the core. Big Macintosh is the red one, a few pieces missing. And lastly, Apple Bloom, the yellow/red one, without any missing pieces). Along with her other occupation as the Element of Honesty, this could all be very stressing, and as someone who prefers to do things independently, this could bring her down considerably. She might feel alone.
//So sorry for all the terrible wording!//

So the apples floating around her seem to be Granny Smith, Big Mac and Applebloom, right? Hmm... I could interpret so much into this picture (though really sad things mostly), but it's really just amazing! Amazing artwork!

The text in the criticism itself was fine for me, but it felt more as a comment rather than a criticism.
I see you used the same text here and it feels more fitting to be a comment.
It doesn't go in depth on technicalities or certain points on and remains more just about stating an opinion and your own relation to it. Which is absolutely fine for sure. I do like reading what others think and how they look and experience my work.
PS: In general I have been trying to become a bit more strict with critiques, trying to highlight the best ones. I've believe I've been a bit too lenient in the past. But this is in no way personal, and I do not want to discourage anyone from writing comments or critiques at all.
I hope I explained the situation and made some things clear on my decisions.

I am wondering what the context of these images are, with Cadence, Luna and Celestia being held in the crystal underneath Twi in the first one, and the three apples in the colours of AJ's family in this one.

It makes me think of death. From top to bottom, it starts with the stripping of her hat, the apples, her ribbons, the things that surrounded and symbolized her in life. Without her they lose their meaning and are destined to be scattered and disintegrate. Next is the anguish on her face, the inevitable sadness of knowing that her life is ending - everything that will be accomplished, finished, and everything that might have been, lost. And finally at the bottom, the reclamation of her body by the roots, dragging it back into the ground from which it sprang, animated by the spark of life, now a dieing ember. My favorite detail is the tendrils of the roots, how they resemble veins in her limbs. It's easy to imagine her life flowing out through them, back into the earth. Stunning. Shocking. I don't know how to describe it. I think it's the most evocative piece of pony art I've ever seen.Β

This comment of yours is one of the reasons I really liked trying to make these two pieces of Twilight, and Applejack. It's also why I kept the description very simplistic and open for interpretation, and that makes it wonderful to read yours on this piece with the breakdown of the individual parts.
Thanks for the read!

No real plans on making the others.
I've been switching styles quite a bit again, which makes it feel harder to keep this as an actual series within the same visual aesthetics.
That doesn't exclude the chance, though! I'll definitely keep these in mind, just in case I feel like making another one, or an idea for what to do with the others pops up.

Do you have any tips on how to draw the muzzle?
π: 0 β©: 1
AssasinMonkey In reply to Druzponz [2015-02-10 22:12:49 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for a bit late reply, but to try and answer your question.
A way to try and look at it is trying to block in the shapes. Most basic way would be a sphere with a cube on front.Β I generally have the head as a sphere and the muzzle in front of it as a sort of tapered rectangular shape, which I try to smooth out and merge with the rest.
This is mostly a simplified breakdown of how you can look at constructing the face. In this particular piece the jaw on the sides is a lot more squared off than the top of the head. But that can show the variations you can try to apply to it.
It might be a bit tricky to try and explain it just with text.
In the 4th frame of my WIP you can see the edges of the shapes in the face a bit clearer: Hold [WIP]
My initial sketch doesn't have as much blocking in as other artists may do, which is a more personal choice. I've also made so many different face shapes and trying to develop pony heads for couple years now that I've become a bit more used to it.
Hope this at least helps a bit. I'd be more than happy to try and answer any more questions you might have.
