From what I have heard, it really isn't a good idea to rent a flat (expensive and difficult to organize). I was lucky enough to find a language school which provides accommodation for doing a small amount of easy work per week.
I'm currently living in Urawa (浦和市) which is about half an hour on the train from central Tokyo. My plan is to travel to Hokkaido, Shikoku and Okinawa though (if time and money permits).
Unfortunately, it's likely that you're going to have to fall back on teaching English here if you stay for any extended period of time....

You are right about the illustration and I aim to do as much drawing as possible to develop as an artist and hopefully push it closer to being a profession. I am somewhat self-conscious about asking but hope to support myself somewhat by taking on commisions whilst there.
