Description
Date of completion: March 2012It's been a while since I posted anything, but I have been trying to work on improving. I haven't had as much time to devote to my interests as I would have hoped for after returning to College. Regardless, this is the Zoid piloted by one of the protagonists in an upcoming project I'm working on.
Dubbed "Apollo" by its pilot, this is a Bio-Zoid developed using the Molga as a basis, and is currently the only one of its kind in existence. The "Flamolga" (a completely original combination of "flame" and "Molga" ._. ) is most notable for its ability to generate and control fire. Despite being based on a cannon-fodder zoid, Flamolga is anything but. Vast upgrades have been made to the design, including a unique Silk Hell Armor system which generates a protective coating around the zoid.
This coating consists of multiple layers, which put together make Flamolga appear to be covered in a whitish fur.
The Outermost layer is composed of a highly flammable material that allows the zoid to literally light itself on fire for close combat. This layer is quickly replenished by the 10 armor generators installed around the thorax.
The second layer of the coating is a unique silk weave that mimics the properties of armor, blunting kinetic impacts and dissipating energy strikes. This layer takes somewhat longer to regenerate, often requiring several hours before it completely replenishes, depending on the degree of damage sustained.
The third and deepest layer of the coating is a special insulating layer, focused around the cockpit. While Flamolga can withstand extreme temperature with little risk to structural integrity, the same can not be said for the pilot inside. This layer is engineered to maintain the internal temperature of the cockpit, preventing the heat from Flamolga's fiery attacks from cooking the Pilot inside. This third layer is the most important to the zoid's continued operation, and requires manual repair should it be damaged. If a breach were to go undetected, then use of Flamolga's fire attacks will quickly cause the cockpit temperature to rise, resulting in either a). an emergency shutdown, or b). cooking the pilot to death.
I took inspiration from the pokemon Merlarva/Larvesta when designing the zoid. Any thoughts, suggestions, or questions are very much appreciated and encouraged. I didn't think this turned out too badly for my first real attempt with Adobe Illustrator.

A technical question about the armor regeneration. Where are you getting the mass to rebuild the armor layers? Does it scoop up dirt and then use pure energy to synthesize the materials from the raw elements?
I'm not trying to shoot down your idea, I'm just curious if you have a specific idea about how it works. The synthesis idea has been done before in the Zoids manga; a hammerhead that could synthesize water mines via the sodium in salt water.
Just something to think about.

I've been thinking about what you said, and the best explanation I've come up with that also fits in with the story I'm planning is that Flamolga's core produces far more energy than a zoid of its size would ever need, and an energy-to-mass conversion system is responsible for the regeneration by rearranging atoms, molecules, and ions as necessary to fill in any gaps in the armor. I'd still like to come up with something that isn't so much of a "hand-wave", but I honestly hadn't thought about this before. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

No problem! I rather enjoy coming up with this stuff as well, so I'm kinda quick to analyze. If you want to go the energy to mass conversion route, you could just compare it to murasame liger's ability to 'resynthesize' it's armor during an evolt. Not to mention doing that would leave the option open for a possible evolt to a volcarona inspired zoid, but I'm probably just letting my zoid/pokemon nerdiness show.
If you ever want to bounce ideas off someone for a future project, hit me up!
