Description I will keep updating this file. Wow! this was updated with the picture from today and some older ones i had before. woohoo!
I also have Pluto ---> fav.me/d918tlb
you can use this however you like!
Made with NASA/JPL/New horizons data. in case you live under a copyright rock.
Made using Blender 3D and GIMP

##########################
UPDATE (July 21 2015)
Added the HD tile to Charon, its a crappy hard to work with high angle with shadows, but i figured i should put it in. did my best like always.

##########################

UPDATE (July 24 2015)
Added another tile to Charon, it was another crappy resolution tile near the north pole. my paws hurt from doing this all day. hope its worth it!
pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc…

##########################
UPDATE (Sept 10 2015)
Finally some new NH pictures. what the fuck happened for 2 months?
anyway, added more detail and a re map of the flyby side. added this picture pbs.twimg.com/media/COj11FqVEA… and corrected angle a little. now off to work on new Pluto tiles!

##########################

UPDATE (Oct 08 2015)
some small colour adjustments. i will update Charon with HD tiles when all photos of the full face are available.

##########################

UPDATE (Oct 12 2015)

Complete map re-assembly and unwrapping. This map is now far far better then what it was. i feel much more confident with the low resolution parts and the brightness is consistent across the different resolution sets. I used as many photos of Charon as i could including the ones suggested. Long/Lat is now accurate to what i can get. Brightness is accurate, and the colours are as close as i can get them. and now i finally updated the map with the newest HD tiles too.
I can't help but be reminded of the moons of Uranus when working on Charon...
This was a lot of work over around 3 days. But i hope it was worth it! I'm going to bed now zzzz...   hope you enjoy

##########################

UPDATE (2015 Nov 07)
Slight contrast boost.

The raw images taken before the closest approach on 14 July 2015 have been released last week, so it's not neccessary to use the low-quality JPEG data anymore. I am just downloading the LORRI image set (about 4 GB) to see what can be done. It is likely that the quality of the new parts of the map, especially those which have not been released in processed form by NASA, will be improved dramatically compared to my earlier JPEG processing.

Hey!
Could you please update your Charon and Pluto maps with the latest images? There's a lot more detail in the far side, for example from the July 12th images downloaded last week:

I would but there isn't much of anything useful in it. i cant tell if it has any features at all. or if that's all just noise from pixels like the rest of it.

I can, but I'm not going to. I like to keep it raw here, so people can add and modify it and fill it in if they want. like Master-Bit and others.

Okay, I think you're right. I compared the two pictures Charon with different exposures (they were on site "New Horizons"). As a result, the brightness of your texture is really similar to the truth.

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-21 21:45:36 +0000 UTC]

I didn't want it to go dark either. But it is what fit best. Charon is a lot like the moons of Uranus that way too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-18 07:14:11 +0000 UTC]

It is at the same general colour brightness so I'm guessing they are quite the same. if they are it is at such a small amount. maybe a slight difference in contrast makes one look different then the other? the new one is a complete re assembly too.

Art--Blos In reply to Astra-Planetshine [2015-10-18 13:56:57 +0000 UTC]

I asked my friend the scientist about brightness over the map. And he fully supported my opinion. In vain you do not want to listen to knowledgeable people.

In the current version of Celestia looks good. Nevertheless, the brightness of your texture is still not correct.

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-19 23:01:07 +0000 UTC]

It still looks fine to me compared to the raw approach photos with both dwarf planets in view. sta.sh/06kncpnsi9n if anything Pluto needs a little more contrast and alignment not Charon.

Art--Blos [2015-10-10 11:31:45 +0000 UTC]

WTF? Why are you so changed the texture? I recall that Charon's albedo is almost 0.4. This is a very considerable figure, close to the albedo of Vesta. Now the brightness of the comet's nucleus is comparable to, if not lower. Not to mention the fact that Celestia default bit darkens objects to be able to increase the brightness of the scattered light. Please return everything as it was. In early December, I plan to release a new version of the add-on.

Pluto is also a concern. He albedo of more than 0.5-0.6

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-10 12:18:31 +0000 UTC]

Nobody is ever happy sorry. : /
Either its too dark or too bright. I just changed the colour brightness of Charon and Pluto to fit the albedo (Charon 0.36 to 0.39 and pluto 0.49 to 0.66 on Wikipedia) so its accurate. And i know Celestia does a crappy job with lighting in everything its unfortunate the developers stopped working on it nearly 7 years ago. It looks beautiful in Space Engine though! Feel free to change the lightness to make it look better in Celestia if you like for the addon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Art--Blos In reply to Astra-Planetshine [2015-10-10 12:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Celestia adequately work with brightness. If adequate texture. Not to be confused albedo and brightness, are two different things. If you focus only on the albedo, the picture will be here this. As far from reality, right?

s017.radikal.ru/i414/1510/bb/0…

In the lower left corner 67P.

So I say it again, the texture was quite natural in the old version. New it is not.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-10 13:58:21 +0000 UTC]

That picture is actually quite accurate. s017.radikal.ru/i414/1510/bb/0… albedo measures how much light is reflected off a surface. 1.0 is pure white, reflecting 100% of the light that hits it. and 0.0 is purely black. reflecting 0% of the light that hits it. Sadly Charon is quite a dark world. darker then Pluto. but not as dark as 67P
Don't forget that if you were actually flying past Charon things also appear darker farther from the sun because there is much less light, Space Engine takes this into consideration but Celestia does not sadly so it would actually look even darker and i know you dont want to hear that . like i say you have my permission to change the brightness if you need to. you dont have to trust me though, i am just a hobby space lover.

Art--Blos In reply to Astra-Planetshine [2015-10-10 14:12:35 +0000 UTC]

If you consider yourself a lover, then listen to the one who understands this better than you. Sun with Pluto shines 275 times brighter than our full moon. Charon may not be so dark!!!

Last time I warn you - you kill the better texture of Pluto and Charon to the web. Do not do anything stupid, but just listen to me. Moreover, what I will let your work be used for its intended purpose.

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-10 15:48:36 +0000 UTC]

Well no need to be so angry at me. The map is still very much visible and is proper relative to Pluto's brightness.
*Edit: i did make Charon a little lighter, just so it fits the Albedo on Wikipedia as it was off by 4.0% en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charon_%…

Robi777 In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-10 11:56:37 +0000 UTC]

Charon is actually a lot darker than pluto: astronomynow.com/2015/07/13/ho…

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Art--Blos In reply to Robi777 [2015-10-10 12:12:19 +0000 UTC]

I saw this picture. Texture is a much MUCH darker in comparison with her. Not to mention that we have no data, with what parameters photograph obtained. If the albedo of 0.4 (for comparison, the Moon only 0.136), Charon will definitely be brighter. Even with the distance to the Sun.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Robi777 In reply to Art--Blos [2015-10-10 13:24:04 +0000 UTC]

Its maybe a bit too dark but Charon is still significantly darker than Pluto. In this composite image, both bodies had the same processing: www.nasa.gov/sites/default/fil…
Images that show only Charon are usually processed differently than Pluto images so that Charon appears brighter than it actually is.

Art--Blos In reply to Robi777 [2015-10-10 13:31:44 +0000 UTC]

If the texture of Charon required dimming that very, very slight. Now is not the texture and darkened shit.

And the brightness of Pluto should not have been touched.

Renerpho [2015-10-07 21:13:25 +0000 UTC]

1. Will you update your Charon map with the new images available?
2. Why does "your" Charon look to have so little contrast, and is so much brighter than the original images? Isn't your map intended to be true color?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Renerpho [2015-10-07 23:59:03 +0000 UTC]

I will but i want to wait until all the pictures come in for the full face. I will update it again then.

Why? its not that bad. looks fine to me pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc… you can always add more contrast if you like i guess. Its hard to tell what is "true colour" when nasa themselves love false colour pictures so much. and all the raw photos are black and white. i do what i can with what i have.

The color of your Pluto map is very close, but your Charon seems to be somewhat different...
