Description I will keep updating this file. Wow! this was updated with the picture from today and some older ones i had before. woohoo!
I also have Pluto ---> fav.me/d918tlb
you can use this however you like!
Made with NASA/JPL/New horizons data. in case you live under a copyright rock.
Made using Blender 3D and GIMP

##########################
UPDATE (July 21 2015)
Added the HD tile to Charon, its a crappy hard to work with high angle with shadows, but i figured i should put it in. did my best like always.

##########################

UPDATE (July 24 2015)
Added another tile to Charon, it was another crappy resolution tile near the north pole. my paws hurt from doing this all day. hope its worth it!

##########################
UPDATE (Sept 10 2015)
Finally some new NH pictures. what the fuck happened for 2 months?
anyway, added more detail and a re map of the flyby side. added this picture pbs.twimg.com/media/COj11FqVEA… and corrected angle a little. now off to work on new Pluto tiles!

##########################

UPDATE (Oct 08 2015)
some small colour adjustments. i will update Charon with HD tiles when all photos of the full face are available.

##########################

UPDATE (Oct 12 2015)

Complete map re-assembly and unwrapping. This map is now far far better then what it was. i feel much more confident with the low resolution parts and the brightness is consistent across the different resolution sets. I used as many photos of Charon as i could including the ones suggested. Long/Lat is now accurate to what i can get. Brightness is accurate, and the colours are as close as i can get them. and now i finally updated the map with the newest HD tiles too.
I can't help but be reminded of the moons of Uranus when working on Charon...
This was a lot of work over around 3 days. But i hope it was worth it! I'm going to bed now zzzz...   hope you enjoy

UPDATE (2015 Nov 07)
Slight contrast boost.

for sure! Its a shame we still know so little about the ice worlds in our system. = s

Thank you for this map too. I want this maps, like anyone, for put them in Celestia.
It's very cool. Pluto has a heart shape   and Charon has something like a circle shape ◎ in its polar cap.

its never a problem!
it indeed looks nice in Celestia, i bet it looks amazing in Space Engine too!
i think the Heart shape is a lovely surprise on Pluto, and Charon has a nice hat. ^^

I just updated the Pluto map with the HD tiles now.

No problem. That 6 mile deep canyon is pretty cool.

For sure, but it's too bad we only see a little bit in HD. Who knows, The deepest canyon in the solar system might be hidden right there in front of us, just hidden on the other side.

Well, as the probe moves away, Pluto and Charon will rotate slightly, so more features will be revealed.

I guess. What do you think of the whole planet debate?

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Stratocracy [2015-07-16 03:00:00 +0000 UTC]

That's a pretty big question! If Pluto is a planet, then i want Haumea and Makemake and all the others like them to be planets too. Pluto and Earth arguably have more in common than earth does with gassy giant Jupiter; and yet Jupiter is a planet and Pluto is not. It all depends on how many planets you want in the solar system and how complex you want your definition. To me, the idea of orbits being a defining factor for planets is a bit stupid. that said, I'm ok with what it is now, but they better watch out if they find, for example, a world the size of Earth in the kuipper belt that has not cleared its orbit. never mind what strange arrangements we may find in other solar systems. i could go on about this for hours. = s

What do you think about it?

Stratocracy In reply to Astra-Planetshine [2015-07-16 03:12:49 +0000 UTC]

You make good points. Jupiter and the Earth have very little in common. But, an earth sized object in the Kuiper belt is highly unlikely, we would've picked one up by now, but I see your point there, if that happened we'd be like 'shoot, yeah, back to square one'.

The whole thing about orbits is stupid, I agree, since Neptune hasn't cleared its orbit of Pluto and Jupiter has Trojan moons, and Saturn has the F Ring. And Earth has, I dunno, the moon!

Size, I think, matters. Haumea is tiny. Really tiny and oblate. Yes, it is really big to me, but really small compared to the planets. I like the Dwarf Planet classification. Ceres and Pluto, and Makemake and Eris fit it well, then Haumea and Sedna fit the Minor Planet (or big asteroid) classification.

The issue here is that Pluto, we learnt today, has a really young surface. Like, there are barely any craters. This poses serious issues for current ideas about planetary geology. Pluto is more of a planet in terms of behaviour than Mars is.

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Stratocracy [2015-07-16 03:58:38 +0000 UTC]

An earth sized object may be a bit big for something out there, but there have been a few interesting articles talking about just such an object out there www.space.com/7728-earth-sized… i know that they ruled out any extra gas giants or brown dwarfs.

Indeed, bringing up trojans and moons and other objects make things even more tricky!

hmm. good point, Haumea is not round, but its not to much smaller then Pluto, that makes things even more confusing with shape. I was just thinking, a definition for a planet, or dwarf planet should not need a spacecraft to go visit it first before making the classification. I have run into the argument where i mentioned that Orcus and Quaoar should be dwarf planets too, They are bigger than Ceres affter all, and Ceres is a dwarf planet. i got the reply of "it is unknown if Orcus and Quaoar are massive enough to be round" so they are not "ofishally" dwarf planets. That's ridiculous, we would need a visiting spacecraft to go figure out if they are round or not. never mind all the other ones near that size too. We don't need spacecraft to see if a star is a K2V class, and we don't need a spacecraft to visit a galaxy to see if it is a dwarf galaxy or not. it needs to be something we can observe from earth. and shape is just to hard to tell from here.

And i agree with that, Pluto is far more complex then mercury as well, its alive, fresh, and changing. its a real biter today. The same argument could be made for Titan, its got lakes after all, and yet it is only a moon as much as Phobos is. and yet they are extremely different; are Saturn's rings moons too because they orbit something other then a star?

At this point, I just throw down the towel and say I don't care what they call anything, they are all beautiful unique worlds by themselves no matter what. lol
Though i have a feeling the IAU will not change the definitions, even though now that we know so much about Pluto and its companion Charon. They are stubborn like that, they were pretty stubborn in considering naming exoplanets too.

its crazy

As an amateur astronomer, I get why the IAU did it.

indeed, id just wish they let others get involved during the definition and naming

I think Pluto is a dwarf planet. It's a planet, but small.

Astra-Planetshine In reply to Stratocracy [2015-07-16 20:49:51 +0000 UTC]

i can agree. dwarf galaxies are still galaxies after all.

but with that said. how many planets are in the solar system?
